It always impresses me at the way in which ANZAC DAY is celebrated in Australia. Our visit in 2017 co-incided with it and we went to the settlement of Wolumla NSW. The parade was led by the children from the local primary school to an open air service which was followed then by a splendid bun fight in the Memorial Hall.

Two "Old Comrades" chatting before the Parade. The lady was wearing her dad's medals- RAAF Pilot. She told me she was not aware until quite recently of his WW2 experiences and had only just received his medals, which she wore with great pride.

What a lovely picture, medals worn with pride and that is how it should be, sadly my father in law didn't apply  for his medals, I have no  Idea why but I find that incredibly sad.

What Jeff, no Two Up?  It is the only day it can be legally played.
They said over 40,000 attended the Dawn Service at the Shrine in Melbourne and every township either holds that or the March or both.  Afraid it was too cold for me to go to the local service this morning.  Lots of younger people attended though.
We will remember them.
James -Victoria, Australia originally from Keynsham, Somerset.

Just back from Dentist ,some tweaking and things much more comfortable.
Then blood test at health centre re new medication and liver and kidney functions.

I bought some new everyday pots from Morrisons.
They are quite cheap ,four of dinner, tea plates ,pasta bowls and dessert dishes for £14.
White glass, heatproof.
I could not carry them so a member of staff packed them for me in paper and will deliver them this evening!
Not far out her way but still after a day’s work,a very kind gesture .
I will offer her some “ carrier and delivery money,”to Charity if she refuses.

A very cold sunny morning .
I got out  on the line a very old but perfectly good blanket and a mattress cover. From son’s bed- away to head office for a few days.
Do you know the blanket still has the Utility label from wartime ,I kept a lookout for planes and doodlebugs V1s and V2s !
It came from Dad’s when we cleared his house.
Well just had “ brunch” breakfast really.
Not really cooking tonight ,only me , a Croque Monsieur (-cheese and ham butty toasted with salad.)

Hope all are well.
Cheerio.Viktoria.

LM,  if you know what medals your father-in-law was entitled to you can always buy replica medals. Unlike WW1 medals WW2 meals were not routinely stamped with  the name and number on the rim, those you find that are stamped have usually been done by the recipient.

I have a feeling  these medals might have been spoken about at sometime but I think the people,e concerned thought if dad didn't want them then perhaps we shouldn't either   my husband had to respect that view, a real shame as I said.

People change their minds LM, so it might be worth broaching the subject of the medals again.

A few years ago I applied for and received my grandfather’s WW2 medals (this is in Australia). They are originals, not replicas, presumably recast. There was no cost involved. I always knew that my grandfather had not taken up his medals but I am unsure of the reason, though I do have a theory.

Im sure he wouldn’t have minded me getting them though.  :)
