Sad article about Charlotte in The Surrey Comet, and General Advertiser, 01 June 1872. Cannot post it all as it is too long. She was acquitted at trial.

Charlotte in 1881?:

With Samuel Harris, tailor, who is perhaps the father of William.

This may or may not be of interest. Marriage of William Harris, Widower, aged 27 to Cecilia Jane Thomsett, 22, daughter of Gilham Thomsett, labourer at St Andrew's on 7/11/1908. He was the son of William Harris, tailor, deceased. William was a Tailor, later a Farmer of 14, Peter Street and they had a son, also William, baptised at St Andrew'a on 31/10/1911.
The Eastry mentioned in the Census refers to the Eastry Registration District, which included Deal and the surrounding villages, including Eastry.

I referenced that in Reply #2, but when you say "William was a Tailor, later a Farmer of 14 Peter Street" are you referring to "William Sr." or William Jr.? Where did you find this information? I can see William Jr. residing at 14 Peter Street in 1911, but he is a market gardener.

Sorry if I'm missing something.

Is it possible he'd gone to fight in the Boer War? Quite a few young men of his age are missing from 1901 for that reason

Thank you for your reply Queenie. Sorry if I didn't make myself clear. The William who was a Tailor then a farmer was William the younger. The information was got from the Parish Records, of which I have a set. Market Gardener was often referred to as Farmer for ease of writing.

Many thanks for all your replies.
I am puzzled in the time around William Harris Lill's christening. The census for 1881 was taken on the 3 April and shows Charlotte and Samuel Harris in Deal. The christening of William Harris Lill is on the 18 Sept 1881.She married Richard Wraight Crickett on the27 Feb 1882 and is a widow.I cannot find Samuel Harris's death in this period. Could it have been suicide?
