1841 Census Manchester
« on: Wednesday 24 April 24 00:15 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone
I am hoping to find a copy of the 1841 Census for Manchester for my Hannah BRIERCLIFFE/BRICLIFFE age 30/35 with daugther ELIZABETH the address looks like Cumberland St. House 7? ( I think) (The copy I have is nearly illegible)

There’s about 8 people living in this house.  Looks like an 80 year old  ELIZA ? is the first mentioned on this record.  Would love to know exactly where this place is if possible.  Kindest regards Dianna

The first person is Elizabeth Unsworth 80    they have abbreviated her name to Eliz th.
Hannah Bricliffe 30
Elizabeth Bricliffe 7
Frances Hall 20
Benjamin Couts 14
Joseph Pampler 20  Painter
George Pearce  25 Currier
David McNab  25 born Scotland

The image is clearer on ancestry however the transcription is much worse.
All born Lancashire except David McNab.

It looks like Cumberland Court (unclear whether "Court" that is correct) House 7, though the entries before are simply on Cumberland St. You can see Cumberland St here on this 1845 map:

And this side by side view:

Here it is on a larger scale, towards the SW corner of this map.

It may be in No.1 Court which is named, although all the houses there appear to face on to a street.  Some may be back-to-backs which have not been shown as such.

I think it is Cumberland Street. The top of the right hand page has Cumberland St Contd. it looks like ‘Court’ but is the abbreviation for continued.
The house numbers are decreasing over the pages with some cellar dwellings listed.

Hi Everyone
Thanks so much for all of that.  Wonderful to see a map of where they actually lived great to add a "visual".   Hannah is then living in 1851 Fleet St Manchester with her married daugther Elizabeth and husband William LOWE.  Hannah is widowed by then.

I am trying to track down some more information from (hopefully) the rate books in Manchester to follow their movements and see where the paper trail ends for John BRIERCLIFFE husband of Hannah.

They are both living at Greenwood st 5 October 1834 when their daughter died (Charlotte)

There is also a J BRIERCLIFFE in the electoral roll for
Greenwood Street, Manchester Township in 1835.

So that is were I am at the moment.  Thanks so much for all the help and information.  Regards Dianna
