Never been so excited by an Ag Lab before! (Burgh, Suffolk.)
« on: Wednesday 24 April 24 08:54 BST (UK) »
I am tracing the history of someone adopted at birth, and I found a death cert. for Thos RAMSAY died 1907 at Knodishall. Occupation: Farm Bailiff.
He was born in 1824, and married Hannah BAKER 1852.
As at 1851 & 61 he was working at Thistleton Hall, which I have discovered, is a 3 moated, scheduled ancient monument, no less!
That's one for the album.  :)

Their daughter Eliza (Ramsay) WRIGHT was school mistress at the Old School House in Burgh.

Gosh, THREE moats , must have been desperate times!
The county ,and the date of the hall might give some clue as to why such strong defences.
There’s posh for you.!

Viktoria.

Well THREE moats seems a bit excessive just to be POSH Viktoria.  :D
I suppose they might have been as much about fish, or drainage, as about defences?

And they were indeed posh. VERY County Set, as the reports of the annual hunt do show.

Thank you for those Sandra.  :)

Congratulations.

I haven't yet come across anyone who has ben adopted but I think you did a lot of delving to discover that fact.

This is where DNA would come in handy.   Why was he given the high position of having a farm and also organising rentals, etc. from other farms on the estate?

Rena, it is a bit of an epic project, and I sincerely hope it fills the void.

Peter Hughes has done some research into Thistleton Hall, Burgh and has a photo ...
https://thesheeprug.com/hasketon/hasketons-history/a-farm-walk/
 ----------
2nd Add:
According to Accessions List 2002
Suffolk County Council
Bury St Edmunds Record Office
Deeds
Burgh: Thistleton Hall (HD2213)

 ----------
I have read somewhere the predecessors of the site were Catholics. Might explain why the earlier property which stood there was well defended.
 ----------
The Building News, dated 2nd April 1880 via the Internet Archive ...

THISTLETON HALL, SUFFOLK.

"On March 12th we illustrated in a detailed manner, from Mr. Brightwen Binyon's sketches, the interesting old chimney piece from Thistleton Hall, Suffolk. To-day we publish a general view of the mansion itself, showing the extensive alterations and additions now in course of execution from Mr. Binyon's designs."
 ----------
Added:
On my Mother's side an ancestor was a Farm Bailiff on the Savernake Estate, he would collect the rents, manage the farm workers for the Land Owner or the Steward of the Lord of the Manor.
