Martin McHugh, criminal
« on: Wednesday 24 April 24 18:01 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm able to trace reliably Martin McHugh in the Criminal Registers, but having trouble finding census and marriage records for him.

He was born in Castlebar, County Mayo, in 1853 and appears on the 1861 and 1871 censuses in Liverpool with his family. Son of Martin McHugh (died 24 Dec. 1860) and Catherine, nee Mangan.

The UK Calendar of Prisoners gives a list of his convictions in 1905 as:
8 June 1867, Liverpool
19 October 1876, Liverpool
13 April 1891, Birkhenhead
1  December 1892, Chester
11 June 1895, Liverpool, as Frank Martin
13 November 1895, Liverpool
14 November 1896, Liverpool
27 April 1899, Liverpool
25 July 1900, Liverpool
12 convictions from May 1872–Jul 1904 for intent to steal, assaulting police constable, begging and drunkenness.

He's in the 1901 census as a prisoner in Devon:
Martin McHugh, convict, married, 48, stevedore-docker, born Ireland.

Haven't managed to find a marriage or a 1881, 1891, 1911 census record.

I have records of further convictions after 1905:
7 May 1908, Liverpool. States he was released from Wakefield Prison on 23 February 1911, and permanent residence is intended as Liverpool. There is a Martin McHugh born in Castlebar on the 1911 census in Manchester, but I can follow that family in earlier censuses, and can rule that one out.

On 17 July 1911, he's convicted again and goes to Parkhurst, where's he's released on 25 July 1919, again with Liverpool as his intended address.

Can anyone help me find out who he married, and his appearances on the census? Thanks in advance for any help.  :)

Are you descended from one of his children?  If the child was born in England you can look up the birth on GRO online which will give mothers maiden name

1881 census - No 9 House, 3, Eaton St Court, Liverpool

There's a Martin (born Mayo) and Margaret McHugh (born Liverpool), with 3 children
Martin's occupation is Labourer. Martin born 1854. Margaret born 1855.

Maybe Martin and Margaret were together several years before their marriage.
There is an 1879 baptism for George McHugh son of Martin and Margaret Craigh

Thank you! I had found the census record from 1881, but was unable to find a marriage between them! I think this is a good possibility, as the father is correct. Thank you  :)

The last criminal record I have for him is from 1919, but certainly possible there is more. I think this is probably likely given location of birth.

Looking at deaths, there is a potential in 1925:

Mar Qtr 1925 McHugh Martin age 70 West Derby 8b 453.

Think this could be him, even though the age is a little bit off, but only by a year, so not a big deal, but I haven't really located any other possibilities.

There is a burial record in the Ford Cemetery, where almost most of my Catholic relatives were buried, 7 January 1925, with last address as the Workhouse (107 Rice Lane), so looks a good fit.
