Searching businesses in Dublin - 1930s
« on: Thursday 25 April 24 11:28 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone,

I wonder if you can help.

I am trying to learn more about my great-grandfather's business in Dublin. He owned a cycle and radio store on Lord Edward Street until 1935 when it sadly burned down.

Can anyone kindly advise on the best way to learn more about his business, such as the specific address, co-owners, employees, when the business opened?

Many thanks for any help you can offer.

Kind regards,
RyanM

To add, his name was Patrick Doherty.

Thanks

are you sure about the street and years?

I eventually located Lord Edward street in directories for 1931 and 1935 on AskaboutIreland website but no sign of Patrick Doherty or a Cycle and Radio shop

Hi,

Thank you for looking into this.

Please see the news article attached which a relative shared with me. I am not sure why it isn't appearing in the directory.

Maybe the business did not operate for very long, at least that address ?

I managed to locate Lord Edward Street Dublin in slightly later directory listings, 1936 and 1940, still no sign

Many of the names and business seem to carry forward through the years, only gap seems to be number 13, shown as a wire works in 1931 and vacant in several later listings, might be where your Doherty was located ?

Thank you athacliath62 and dublin1850.

Interestingly, it looks as though there are burn marks where the brickwork starts above the shop. And maybe on the grey brickwork running up along each side of the shop. What do you think?

When I revisit Dublin, I'll have to pass the shop and take a look.

Looks like old fashioned pollution to me.
From the newspapers
1932 13 Lord Edward St up for rent
1933 Thomas Darcy an agent for election candidates is using it
1933 it's again up for rent
1939 Respectable boy to hold sign apply 13 Lord etc.
Nothing between 1933 and 1939.

Thank you.

It looks as though his shop's address wasn't 13 Lord Edward St in that case.

Is the only option I have going to the library archive based in Dublin and trawling through the records?
