Edwin Daniel/s East Stonehouse
« on: Sunday 28 April 24 17:46 BST (UK) »
I am searching for the birth or baptism of an Edwin Daniel/s born 27 Feb 1859, I got this DOB from his military services record.  In the 1861 census he was living with his grandmother in East Stonehouse, and who I believe to possibly be his mother Ellen Maria Daniel. the grandmother was Elizabeth Daniel nee Oram.  Census states born in East Stonehouse.

I cannot find a birth on the gro or other ancestry sites and no baptism.  I have found this previously that there is no birth reg when a child is illegitimate, but generally there has been a baptism record.  I have tried just putting in Daniel/s for dates either side of 1859 but there appears to be no Edwin born around that time anywhere.

Ellen Maria was not married and is on the 1861 census listed as single.

I cannot confirm what exactly happened to her after this date either, she may have married a Francis Steward but cannot confirm this.

Many thanks

Think surname is Daniel rather than Daniels.  mmn is Oram according to birth reg for Rosinna (not Rosina) & Philip

Yes it is Daniel/s as used both in different documents.  Yes Rosina is spelt Rosinna on birth reg

Do you have Edwin in 1901 onwards census reports? When did he die?

The 1862 marriage record for Ellen to Francis Steward (seaman) lists her father as Philip Daniel (tradesman). That appears to be her father in the 1851 census.

No sign of Ellen Steward after 1862.

1871 census - Looks like Edwin Daniels (age 12) is in the East Stonehouse Workhouse.

1881 census - Onboard the HMS Dido in West Africa. Note: Birthplace mis-transcribed as Limerick.

Edwin in 1901 was in Wokingham.
He died in 1904,

I have everything apart from the birth or a baptism.
I thought maybe Ellen Maria Daniel was his mother but am not sure now.

No sign of Ellen Steward after 1862.

Just searched GRO under Oram in case that was used as his surname but nothing
