In 1871 could Ellen be Ellen Andrews, 30, born Stonehouse? Living in Plymouth, husband is William.

Is Philip Andrews, 12, the Philip Daniel, age 2, in 1861?

I have the birth cert for Philip:
Born Philip William 28 dec 1858
Father William Henry Oram Engineer RN HM Ship (Cannot read) could be Lissy
Mother Ellen Oram formerly Daniel
24 Union Place East Stonehouse.

So that rules out Emma being Edwin's mother. But...I have new theory:  ;D

Was Edwin actually the son of Eliza Daniel (nee Oram)? Obviously he's listed as her "grandson" in 1861, but I think that's to cover-up shenanigans whilst husband Philip was overseas from 1856-1863.

It turns out Philip Daniels (tailor) enlisted with the Royal Navy in 1854! His RN record is on FindMyPast. Everything matches: birth year (1819/1820) , occupation (tailor), and marital status (married).

In the 1861 census he's on the HMS Encounter in Japan. After serving on several other vessels he's back in the UK in August 1863.

1871 and 1881: Philip and (new) wife Ann can be found in Ashburton, Devon. He’s returned to his profession of tailor. He died in 1882.

So if Eliza Daniel(s) died before 1871 does this explain why Edwin is in the workhouse? My theory would also explain why Edwin has no birth reg or baptism. Eliza needed to keep his birth “under wraps” as hubby Philip was overseas.

Gosh that is def a good theory.  I did see that there was a Philip Daniel in Ashburton but thought it was not our Philip Daniel.

but what surname would she have given and surely she still would have registered his name! I have gone through so many Edwin's born 1859 in Devon and cannot for the life of me see which one it could be.

I think you may def be onto something with this though.

Another thing I have just thought of how do we really know that is Edwin's correct DOB that is on his military records?  He could have just made that up, couldn't he??

Oh that's right! Another Daniels birth while Philip is away overseas. I wonder who wife Eliza was keeping company with from 1858-1860? Perhaps it was a Mr Baker.
