Whereabouts of 2nd Battalion, 1st Royal Regiment of Foot 1837-1857
« on: Tuesday 30 April 24 17:38 BST (UK) »
I'm researching a soldier who served with the 2nd Battalion, 1st Royal Regiment of Foot between 1837 and 1857.

Does anyone know where they were stationed during this period?

Hi
My 2x great grandfather was in the 1/14 Regiment of Foot.
He signed up in Glasgow on the 5th January 1855 and served for 21 years.
He fought at Sevastopol….he received medals for this
His service record shows he was in also in Malta for 3 1/2 years, Ionian Islands for 1 1/2 years, the West Indies for just over 4 years before going to India for 6 years. He was also in Ireland and England.

What I found  interesting /surprising is that his wife was also with him in India as they had four children born in India.
I have all their baptismal records.

Hi Tam,
1/14 Foot was not the same regiment as the 1st Foot (that is to say, the Royal Scots). 1/14 means the 1st Battalion of the 14th (Buckinghamshire) Regiment of Foot, which later (in 1881) became The Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment).

It may seem strange that a Scot joined an English Regiment, but there was some fairly energetic recruiting going on in 1855 within the British Army to make up for the fact that it had been drastically reduced after Wellington's victory at Waterloo in 1815, but now faced a major campaign against Russia in the Crimea.

The 1st Battalion, 14th (Buckinghamshire) Regiment of Foot did indeed serve in all the places you mentioned.
1854    Malta
1855    Crimea
1856    Malta
1858    Ionian Islands
1860    West Indies
1864    England
1866    Ireland
1867    Malta
1868    India

Hi Andy
Thanks for very much for this.
It’s very helpful to see the chronology/time line.
I have his discharge documentation which provided when and where he signed up.
It also shows how much time he spent abroad but not the actual dates and it doesn’t mention the time spent at home ( Ireland and England)
They returned home to Glasgow sometime between being discharged in 1875 and the census of 1881.
Thanks again for your help.
Cheers Tam
