Finding female relatives
« on: Thursday 02 May 24 18:18 BST (UK) »
Im looking for a female relative and hit a brick wall. Her name is Marion Baker, nee Brooke. Born 24 April 1919, married John Baker in Birmingham, Warks, Dec 1937. Ive been unable to trace any marriages or deaths or passenger, and am at a loss where to look next.  The records office say that a woman can use any name she chooses and likewise can be registered in the deaths under assumed name. doesn't the correct birth date have to be put on cert?

Any ideas?

  Welcome to RootsChat.
I have tried the 1939 register, using the exact birth date and just the year, with no luck at all. Perhaps the marriage failed and she did take another name? Someone else may have more thoughts about your problem.

Welcome to Rootschat.

Did she have a daughter called Mavis, born 1939?

I presume you know that John can also be known as Jack?

Have you tried her under the spelling Marian?

Correct details can only be put on a death certificate if the informant knows them. In some cases a person has to be registered as "Unknown".

Do you know what happened to her husband?

There are baptisms for a daughter born 1941 and a son born 1943 on familysearch. The son's birth is indexed with mother's maiden name Brookes. So they were in Birmingham at least until 1943.

FindMyPast free search in 1939 has Marion Baker (Higgins) with that DOB living in Birmingham. Possible marriage in 1948.

1939 - there is Marian Baker with the 1919 birth date, with husband, Jack, plus a daughter with mmn of Brooke, and one redacted entry.  All in Birmingham.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
