William Newman born 1832 Ayrshire Scotland did he die in America ?
« on: Saturday 04 May 24 11:17 BST (UK) »

I have William born in Ayrshire in 1832 his first wife Elizabeth Watson died around 1862 and in 1870

William married Margaret Walker  in Dunoon Arygllshire  he was aged 37 and she was 22

I believe they emigrated to America not long afterwards trying to find where and when he died.

 Hi,
No I  haven't found them on any census in America or Scotland but I do have Margaret's

marriage in 1898 in Laurence Mass. she married Ernest Freer.

As there is no death for any other of the family in Scotland this led me to believe they had gone

together to America.

Could these be William & Margaret's children born in Scotland?

William, b. 20 Aug 1871 Strathblane, Stirlingshire, Scotland https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQT4-TPP

Margaret Ross Newman b. 7 Jan. 1873, Kilsyth, Stirlingshire, Scotland https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQ4H-XY3

If so, there is a family tree for the younger William that has him dying in Vermont in 1958.  https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/GJ2B-2D2  I don't know if that's accurate, but Vermont is near Massachusetts.

This family tree has the Margaret who married Frederick Ernest Freer as the daughter Margaret and the marriage in 1898 in Vermont.  https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LV69-PC4

The 1958 death certificate for the younger William lists him (and his father) as William Newman Barnes.  His mother is listed as Margaret Walker, and the birthdate is 20 Aug. 1871, so those fit.  Not sure why they became Barnes?

The younger William's petition for naturalization also says William Newman Barnes with the same birthdate and place as the birth record from above.  It says he came from Dunham, Canada to the US via railway on 15 Mar. 1901.

The younger William's obituary is here - https://www.newspapers.com/article/st-albans-daily-messenger-obituary-for/146585354/  It says he also had a brother Jack Dwight of Los Angeles, California.

There was also a mention in 1945 of the death his brother Alfred Dwight Barnes in Portland, Maine and it mentioned the brother Jack in California.  https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-burlington-free-press/146585441/

A Feb. 1918 newspaper from Connecticut mentioned Mrs. Frederick Freer of Cromwell going to Lawrence, Massachusetts for her father's funeral.  https://www.newspapers.com/article/hartford-courant/146586671/  I couldn't find a death there for William Newman or William Barnes.

Margaret Freer's obit is here, and it mentions brother William N. Barnes - https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-burlington-free-press/146586614/
