Strand Rd Clontarf
« on: Monday 06 May 24 06:11 BST (UK) »
I'm researching a property "Tivoli" which in 1921 was on the corner of Strand Rd & Castle Avenue, Clontarf. Google Maps (I'm in Australia) doesn't show such an intersection.

It's a reasonable guess that Strand Rd might have run along the shore, and since been renamed Clontarf Rd, but I'd like to confirm if/when that happened, and, if it did not, where the named intersection was.

Thanks in anticipation

I don't know the area but there are many references to Tivoli House in newspapers from at least 1882. Mostly the address is Castle Avenue Clontarf, or corner of Castle Avenue.

** added just checked - it takes you to the main site

Search Castle Avenue, Clontarf on ‘map Genie 25 ins’ top row, 3rd map selection. It shows Tivoli House

Tivoli House shows on this 1907 map:
https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=17.3&lat=53.36171&lon=-6.21041&layers=6&right=ESRIWorld

Modified to add:
Possibly this house on this 1837 map (bottom left most house).
https://maps.nls.uk/view/246835526#zoom=7&lat=7335&lon=1029&layers=BT

I see on the RHS of the 1837 map the "road" or area along the coast is called Raheny Strand.

Old maps of Dublin here

I can only see it as Clontarf Road or with no name marked.

The Newspapers Archives gives results for Strand Road up to 1968, I wonder if it a section of Clontarf Road.

It is quite often called "the Strand Road" or "the Clontarf Strand Road". Without knowing the area, possibly differing names for the same road.

Yes, looking through the papers that seems to be the case, North Strand Road pops up a lot as well. Dublin Borough Commissioners were calling it Strand Road in 1925 but the maps all seem to use Clontarf Road. Case of everyone knew where they meant.

I see in the 1901 and 1911 Censes Tivoli House is listed in Castle Ave.
John Whyte in 1901 http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/Clontarf_East/Castle_Ave_/1269494/
John Robb in 1911
John Whyte died 1903 so I was hoping the exchange of the house would give a good description of it’s position but no joy, on the off chance you haven’t got it already https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSK3-MSVT-L?i=320&cat=185720
