Glasgow Trades Directories 19th centuary
« on: Tuesday 07 May 24 21:49 BST (UK) »
I have been searching for an elusive John Laurie born 1822 in Glasgow. I have not found him in any census records after 1841, when he was a book binder journeyman.

I have a reference in my notes to the trades directories of 1859 & 1878 for a John Laurie bookbinder but unfortunately I have mislaid the addresses and now I can't recall on which website I found the original information.

I would be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction.

Also in the 1842 Postal Directory for Glasgow, John LAURIE "bookseller, bookbinder, stationer and librarian" at 56 Main St Gorbals.

Another entry for  John LAURIE "bookseller, bookbinder, stationer and librarian" at 218 Argyll St. In 1842 Post Office Directory, there is a James C BROWN, bookseller and stationer at this address.

Thank you for your interest and the information.
I have managed to locate him in the Post office directories in 1842 and also his father Robert in Bridge Street who is listed as a bookseller, bookbinder & stationer.
I have also found John in two of the electoral registers on Ancestry, which is where I must have noted my original information, so thank you for the prompt.
But unlike the spirit merchant and the grain merchant, John the bookbinder is still rather elusive!!
