Scottish foot soldier at Lewes, Sussex 1738

Hello,
I found a baptism record from Lewes, Sussex in 1738 where the child's father is noted as a Scottish foot soldier. Could anyone tell me why a Scottish foot soldier would have been in Lewes in 1738?
Any help would be much appreciated.

I haven’t read it but this Thesis looks interesting and if nothing else contains a lot of references one of which might hold the answer.

I have been told that regiments were moved away from their home areas to other parts of the country so that, in the event of public disorder, they would not be ordered to fire on their own kin.

Sorry for the very late reply. Just wanted to say thanks for your response. Hadn't thought of it that way, but it makes sense!

Thanks Rosie. I've managed to trace the family line, so sorted now!
