Is my television broken?
« on: Wednesday 08 May 24 17:34 BST (UK) »
I was watching my TV earlier today when most of the screen went black apart from a small area in the corner of the screen which also went black after a couple of seconds. The sound is unaffected.
I've looked at the manual for the TV (Panasonic), it wasn't any help. After some Googling I tried unplugging both ends of connected devices (Hard drive dvd recorder, NOW TV stick) and reconnected. No joy. Unplugged all electrical leads and reconnected. It's not a smart TV but I can connect via the NOW TV stick.

Is my telly kaput?  :-[

I found this on a forum (gives a list of things to try):

If your Panasonic TV is producing sound but the screen remains black, it could indicate a potential issue with the display or video input. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

1. Check the connections: Ensure that all cables, such as the HDMI or AV cables, are securely connected to both the TV and the external devices (e.g., cable box, DVD player, gaming console). Consider disconnecting and reconnecting the cables to ensure a proper connection.

2. Test different inputs: Try switching to different video inputs on your TV to determine if the issue is specific to one input or affecting all inputs. Use the input/source button on your TV remote or the on-screen menu to switch between inputs.

3. Power cycle the TV: Turn off the TV and unplug it from the power source. Wait for a few minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on again. This can help reset the TV's internal settings and potentially resolve minor issues.

4. Adjust display settings: On your TV remote, look for buttons like "Menu" or "Settings" to access the on-screen menu. Navigate to the display or picture settings and check if the brightness, contrast, or other display settings are properly adjusted. Resetting the picture settings to default may also be worth trying.

5. Try a different device: Connect a different device, such as a DVD player or gaming console, to the TV and see if it displays properly. This can help determine if the issue is with the TV or the specific device you were using previously.

For me, if I have a problem with my tv, pulling the power cable out of the back of the tv and leaving for a few minutes before plugging back in and switching back on often does the trick.

Thanks for that,  I've tried numbers 1 to 3, unfortunately I can't do number 4 as nothing displays on the screen. The DVD recorder doesn't display and I don't have a games console or other devices. Thanks anyway.  :)

If you're saying you can watch TV using the NOW stick, then the sound and display still work, so the tv can't be kaput.  However if you can't access the menu settings that does seem weird.  The remote doesn't need new batteries I suppose?

No, sorry I phrased that badly. I meant that although I don't have a smart TV I can (normally, when TV was working) connect to the internet for channels such as iPlayer. I can't get any on screen display at the moment.

As the sound is still working I can tell that the remote is working as I can go through the channels, sound but no picture.
