There is a website for NOW TV stick, where viewers discuss having the same issue.

Have you tried connecting the tv to its input with the recorder out of circuit?  To rule out that piece of kit from being the source of the problem.

Yes I've tried that thanks Jane.

I removed the NOW TV stick as my first move so can't be the culprit. Thanks  :)

With tv switched on, do you have a torch (even one on a mobile phone), and can shine it at screen? Does this reveal any of picture (even if only faintly)?

I’m of no help but would ask how old is the tv? These days very sadly they don’t last like the old ones do.

It sounds like the back lights might have failed.

Scotmum, funnily enough, I read about trying this yesterday so I did try it. Nothing showing.

Candleflame, I can't find the receipt but I'm pretty sure it's less than ten years old. I agree, I'd had the old one forever! One good thing, I've found the delivery note (undated) and it says they took the old one away so that's one less problem if I have to buy a new one, was thinking what a carry on it would be disposing of the old one. All comes at a price of course.

Pinetree, that doesn't mean anything to me  ???

If nothing showing with torch, then yes, the backlight may have gone. We replaced a TV in recent years for similar failure (although as it was not particularly old, successfully argued negotiated for refund).

So would that be terminal (for want of a better word)? Should I try to get someone to fix it or would the cost mean it's not worth it?

There doesn't seem to be many companies doing TV repairs, I suppose that says something about the lifespan of modern televisions.
