Who was Kate Harper / who were the Harpers of Tranmere?
« on: Thursday 09 May 24 18:08 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with an ancestor who has been a huge mystery for years. Kate Harper was born around 1866 in Tranmere, Cheshire (according to 1891 census and also married William Green there on 29/1/1890, which would match the convention of marrying in the bride's hometown). Kate and William only had one son, Thomas, born 2/12/1891 in Birkenhead. Though Kate and William are together on the 1891 census (only current census I have with Kate on it) by the 1901 census William has become a widower, so Kate must have died at some point between 1891-1901.

However, I have never been able to find a death record for Kate, nor a birth record matching or close to what we know from the 1891 census and also their marriage certificate, which states Kate's father was a Samuel Harper, bricklayer.

So, as it currently stands I don't know when or necessarily where she was born, when or where she died or anything about her family, the Harpers, at all. I would be extremely grateful for any help with this ancestor so shrouded in mystery! Thank you in advance  :)

Thank you for responding, so quickly too!

Here is the link for William and Kate's marriage certificate:

I am pretty certain it is the same William on the 1891 and 1901 census, and in extension the 1911 census, which again states William as a widower, born in Preston, occupation marine engineer. The birthplace is definitely correct, as I know a lot about the Greens and they were all from Preston before Tranmere, Birkenhead etc. On the 1911 census only child Thomas Green is also present, as well as a servant.

William Green's parents were John Green and Sarah Harling, married 25/1/1845, Preston.

I went down a rabbit hole, hence I deleted my post. William is on 1921 census as well, by himself.

In case it helps with the search for Kate, the address listed for her and William on the 1890 Banns image
is 4 The Woodlands.

Do you recognise either of the marriage witnesses?

This family all appear in 1891 census with Catherine--not our Kate!
