Reeves and Collins
« on: Friday 10 May 24 00:46 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information on 3 people - all connecting through my Great Grandfather proved by DNA - John George McEntagart B- 1847 India D 1919 Dublin

Caroline Elizabeth Reeves B 1880 Dorset D 1969 Aylsbury, Buckinghamshire

Denis Collins B 1873 D 1956 Celbridge, Kildare

Mary Haughton B 1883 (Possibly Tipperary) D 1911 Dublin (Septicaemia)

BACKGROUND

The mother's name on my Grandfather's Civil Registration in Dublin was Caroline Reeves, and his brother George was registered by a Carrie Reeves. While his paternal line was acknowledged by the family concerned, and DNA verified, the children were fostered as "nephews" per census, and very well looked after and educated, no light has ever been shed on their mother, despite extensive research in Ireland, where they were born in 1903 and 1905.

Caroline on these Registrations was a cook, unmarried, no fathers name given.

Caroline Elizabeth Reeves 1880-1969  based on DNA matches using the Leeds method) was also a cook in the 1901 Wimborne, Dorset census. She is untraceable for 10 years and appears again in England in 1911. She has a sister Kate 1878-1951 also a cook, who did not marry. Caroline married Richard Hickman but had no children.

While undertaking this process of DNA clustering I found strong DNA matches to descendants of Alice Mary Collins 1911-2005 and Lily E Collins 1909-2000.
My current hypothesis is that my Great Grandfather John George McEntagart 1847-1919 was the Grandfather of Alice and Lily. Making them the half aunts of my Grandfather and Great Uncle (despite being younger)

I have all the documentation other than why Caroline Elizabeth Reeves was in Dublin in 1903 and 1905. Perhaps for work or perhaps just to give birth to the boys by the same midwife.

I can find very little on Mary Haughton or Denis Collins including no marriage certificate.

Do any of these people mean anything to anyone?

Thanks in advance - Anthea

Do you mean Mary Haughton was married to Denis Collins.
This isn't much.
The newspapers report Mary (publican) wife of Denis Collins Celbridge died in 1914, there is a death to match.
She appears to be his second wife and this would be their marriage in 1913
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1913/09872/5586241.pdf
that at least gives his father's name as John Collins.

Hi Sinann, thanks for your reply.

Denis Collins married Mary Fitzsimons - widow of Gilmore. She died quite quickly after the marriage and he inherited the business and £2000. His last marriage to Kathleen Mahon produced children.

There is no marriage cert for Denis and Mary 'Haughton' that I can find in either Ireland or the British Isles. He did not keep the two girls and it does not appear there was any further contact.

One of my concerns is that perhaps Mary Haughton was a boarded out child and therefore Haughton may not have been her original surname. Also, was Denis Collins really the father of the children and did the marriage even exist?

Anthea.

The Mary Collins who died in 1911
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1911/05405/4509770.pdf
address 14 Blackhall St.
Her husband Denis in the Census and born Wicklow
https://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/Arran_Quay/Blackhall_Street/55636/
fair jump for a labourer in Dublin to end up running a Hotel in Celbridge, which he appears to have lost in 1921 BTW with a mention of a Joseph Collins in the newspaper notice about the hotel.
and a son Edward (informant on death) at some point.

If he was a labourer it certainly was a big jump and he does come across as putting himself in situations for his betterment. It is worth noting that everyone on the record is described as a labourer. I couldn't see a record of a son called Edward so that is worth looking at. Thx.

Just a possible as we can’t find the marriage.
Denis was from Kilcavan Wicklow
This I believe is his family in 1901 (without him)
http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Wicklow/Carnew/Kilcavan_Upper/1818242/
There is a Mary Haughton living in Mooreshill Wicklow not too far from Kilcavan
http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Wicklow/Arklow_Rural/Mooreshill/1813127/
Her age isn’t bad and she is Irish Church.

No, looks like she is Mary Susanna in 1911
