Ashtone, well found in 1871. I have followed all 4 of the children of James Leith & Eliza Benstead. The mystery for me was Caroline Amelia, mother Eliza and Alice, in census.

This might be husband James Leith. GRO online index gives his age as 43.

It is, he was a carver & gilder by trade as per his marriage to Eliza and baptism of children.

If he's the chap who died in 1850 he's obviously not the father of Charlotte (born 1857).

1841 census - Eliza Blundell is at New Compton Street, St Giles in the Fields. Also on the same page is a Sarah Benstead (age 15).

There's also George Blundell (age 30) and Walter George Blundell (age 4 months). NOTE: Walter's name is transcribed on the census as "Wm George". Walter G Blundell died in 1844.

1840 marriage in Islington for George Blundell to Eliza Benstead.

Sorry Ashtone, I meant the 3 children born pre 1850, did not know about Charlotte until your 1871 census post. Still cannot find Eliza, Emma, Caroline in 1851 census.

Had to look.

Alice May North Leith born 28th April 1876 at 38, Alfred Road. Mother Amelia Leith formerly North, Amelia registered the birth. Father James Leith, occupation Dairyman's assistant.

SS - interesting to see Alice's birth details. Using Catherine Amelia's address at the time:

1881 census - Thomas North (born 1848) and family living at 60 Alfred Road, Paddington.

Possibly just a coincidence, though. I'm wondering in Alice used a variety of names for her father (Walter North) on her 1899 marriage record. After all, Walter was Eliza's son with George Blundell.

1871 census - Thomas North is single and residing at Holloway Road, Islington.
