Thomas Branston 1849 Cape Colony/Notts
« on: Sunday 12 May 24 18:16 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am hoping someone can help please
I have a conundrum in my family tree, one of my ancestors was born in George Cape Colony in 1849, his name is Thomas Branston. I cannot find any confirmation of his parents. He features in the UK censuses from 1871 so returned to the UK at some point. I cannot find a record of this either. Could someone assist me please. Thanks

Welcome to RootsChat  :D

You could order his marriage certificate from the GRO as that should give his father's name.  The marriage was registered in SQ 1871 Bingham 7b 503 to a Sarah Glossop.

Birth record of youngest child in 1881:-

BRANSTON, JOSEPH  JAMES     GLOSSOP
GRO Reference: 1881  M Quarter in NEWARK  Volume 07B  Page 433

Link to the GRO website:- https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

If you haven't used them before you will need to register then click on Order a Certificate or PDF.  Fill in the details required from the information I gave above.  Cost is £11.

If you require any further assistance do ask.

Possibly unconnected, but there's a Thomas Branston mentioned in this 1848 probate record in SA.
Haven't read all of it, but it looks like the family is from Lincolnshire and there was a drowning?  ???

Hi
Thank you for the assistance
Updated info I think his dad was John Branston circa 1821 and his mother Catherine nee Spiby. They are from the right area in Nottinghamshire. They sailed on the Coromondel in 1848, don't know what happened from there however to them. I know Thomas was shown on 1871 back in area of Nottinghamshire.

If you are correct about his dad being John, then this appears to be the marriage:-

Marriages Sep 1845
BRANSTON    John        Melton Mowbray    15   299
Spiby    Catharine        Melton Mowbray    15   299

There is an image for this marriage on Find My Past.

John's father is James, occupation labourer.

They were married on 25th August 1845.

He features in the UK censuses from 1871 so returned to the UK at some point. I cannot find a record of this either.

Incoming passengers lists to the UK don't begin until 1878, from foreign ports outside of Europe and the Mediterranean.

The 1845 marriage record image indicates John and Catherine were servants when they married. He was of full age, and she was a minor. If they are the correct parents, I wonder if John enlisted with the British Army afterwards and served at the Cape of Good Hope.

Is this Thomas' funeral notice in March 1919?
