Ullathorne
« on: Sunday 12 May 24 21:34 BST (UK) »
Hello fellow rootschat members.

Can anyone please help locate the parents of the wife of my 2nd great uncle Arthur PAPE.
Her name is Sarah Jane ULLATHORN(e), born l878 in Flamgate Durham and died in Doncaster in 1936.
She married Arthur Pape on the 24th of May 1897 at Wath on Dearne, Yorkshire.

Only one piece of information can I find online and it's that someone posted on ancestry her father was 'Robert'. I cannot find her on the 1881 or 1891 censuses.
                       Thank you for any help.
Dunigan (Dunnigan) and Goughan of York and Ireland (somewhere). Langleys of stairfoot nr. Barnsley also of Belper. William Taylor who died 1906 in Ardsley nr. Barnsley and born Leicester about 1835...(anything on him) Holdstocks of York.
Barfoots of Hunslet and family of Wright Hadfield of Doncaster (or Rotherham) and Hoyland also Foulstones of Hoyland.

Hi Kevkev

There is this possible birth for her, some details a little different:

Births 2nd Qrt 1880
ULLERTHORNE    Sarah Ellen  Durham    10a   382

GRO site is playing up for me so can't double check mother's maiden name.
ADDED: Search working now. Birth looks to have been illegitimate. No maiden name showing for the birth of Sarah. Normally this indicates the name registered for the birth was the mother's surname only.

Just some thoughts to consider...

I think her mother might have been an Elizabeth Ullerthorne (Ullathrone). Elizabeth married a Richard Pallister in 4th Qrt 1880 (Durham  10a 501).

Likely entry for them in 1881 with her family:

John Ullathorne 56 tinsmith b. Chatham, Kent
Elizabeth Ullathorne 56 b. Chester Le St, Durham
James Ullathorne 15 son
David Ullathorne 13 son
Alexander Ullathorne 9 Grandson
Francis Ullathorne 3 Grandson
Richard Pallister 28 Son in Law, coal miner b. Bs Auckland, Durham
Elizabeth Pallister 24 b. Sacriston, Durham
Sarah Pallister 11 months b. Framwellgate Moor, Durham

Address 23 Princess St, Durham

The marriage cannot have been at Wath upon Dearne because FreeBMD gives it in Barnsley registration district.  Wath upon Dearne was always in Rotherham registration district until 1937, then Rother Valley.  You need to see a marriage certificate or register to confirm the father's name and location.

Thank you Molly and Monica, very much.
I appreciate the help.
I did look into the possibility of Sarah Jane being illegitimate, even discounting that her father was a Robert, also the Christian name changes for whatever reason. I did look on the Pallister family a little but it got too late and complicated last night.

Here's what I was going by:
    Detail Source
Name   Sarah Jane Ullathorne
Registration Year   1897
[1897]
Registration Quarter   Apr-May-Jun
Registration district   Barnsley
Inferred County   Yorkshire West Riding
Volume   9c
Page   333
Records on Page (Name)
Isabella Benson
Robert Daniel Jackson
Arthur Pape
Sarah Jane Ullathorne.
==================================
Although I can't take for 100% what another tree on ancestry has as her father (Robert) a marriage certificate would verify the father (hopefully) unless possibly no father due to illegitimacy.
Pity she didn't live until after the 1939 register was taken.
                              Kevin.

Oh I just saw the marriage certificate you so kindly posted Comberton. Thank you!

I had meant to specify the father as Joseph all along and not ROBERT, my mistake.
So we have her age more or less correct and her fathers name and he's a miner.
    Thanks to all.

Did you try the link in reply 1? If it works you can download the marriage certificate to keep.
Good luck.

Just something to keep in mind as you review options.

With her birth being likely illegitimate, she may have made up a father's name for the marriage register.

A coal miner for father...Richard Pallister was also a coal miner...

Wish she could be found in 1891 to add more background here to her early years.

Findmypast has no entries for Elsecar in the Index to Yorkshire Marriages so I think there is a slip-up there.

Added: I have reported it.
