Tks for your input.  Now that I understand the problems a bit better, I feel quite relieved that it was not my lack of skill that was the issue here.

I am trying to track down the original documents  to check the names on the Muster List and it seems likely this will be possible.

It is incredibly kind of you to provide the transcription.  I did pick out a few words but to have the whole document to read with the place names is brilliant.

I was really struck by the timeframe here.  The ship left Bristol in April 1786, Henry Tripp drowned in October, presume that year, and the Witness Statement account made by John Smith in Bristol is dated 1st September 1789.  Really tough on his family.
