Hon. Edward Petre of Stapleton Park
« on: Monday 13 May 24 07:20 BST (UK) »
We have been going through the family Deeds of 1835/6 relating to my ancestor at Selby and they mention that Lord Petre had gone to Brussels.

Reported January 1836
Downes v. Petre.- This was an action, in the Court of the King's Bench on the 18th inst. to recover a sum of money due upon an annuity granted to the plaintiff. The principal parties to the transaction were Thos. Slingsby Duncombe, Esq. and the Honourable Edward Petre. The present demand was for a period of two years and half, up to May last. The cause being undefended, the Jury returned a verdict for the Plaintiff for the full amount £1541. 13s. 4d.

Feb 1836
Hon. Edward Petre, now residing in Brussels.

April 1836
Proclamation at the Clerkenwell Sessions.

Added:
1837 Yorkshire Gazette, 11 November.
At the County Court held on Wednesday, before Robert Davies, Esq., proclamation was made requiring the Hon. Edward Robert Petre, late of Stapleton Park, and now in Brussels, in the Kingdom of Belgium, to surrender himself to the Sheriff of Yorkshire ... to answer Robert Henry Anderson in an action for debt.
 ----------
Edward Petre had been a Member of Parliament for York.

I wondered the same.
The issue popped up again in March 1848 as "Petre v Duncombe" re. "annuity of 600l. a year to one Downs". The Times report is pure "legalese".

Petre's entry in Parliamentary Histories does not mention the matter.b

Apparently he and his wife returned to England in the spring of 1842, having sorted out his debts

Thank you for the link, I am digging a bit just to see where this goes, probably nowhere.

Yes, I thought the Manor of Selby was having some type of difficulty.

Part of the Manor, was advertised for sale in November 1835.

My ancestor George Hood of Selby, Brewer, [also a Cooper & Tanner at Selby] according to documents, has purchased a part.

Hull Packet, 12th July 1833
I notice a sale of furniture at Stapleton Park, between Doncaster and Ferrybridge, have been put up for sale by Auction.

Then found that Stapleton Park was occupied by John Watson Barton by 1839.

Some Barton children are claimed to be born Stapleton.

John Hope Barton, with Mother, Juliana Barton and some Barton relatives of his, are listed at Stapleton Park, Mansion House in the 1861 Census. [Amended]

The Barton family have several residences including one at Swinton, Lancashire and another at Saxby Hall, Lincolnshire. [Amended]

Then found this site, partly about Stapleton Park ...

Perthshire Courier, 4th February 1830

At Edinburgh, on the 28th ult., John Watson Barton, Esq. of Saxby, county of Lincoln, to Miss Juliana Hope, second daughter of James Hope, Esq. W.S.

I don't think these are the Barton family, I had in mind.

"Some Barton children are claimed to be born Stapleton"

Can you clarify exactly what you are trying to establish?

Thank you.

I am not trying to establish anything further in relation to Stapleton Park with regard to Barton, late of Stapleton Park, Yorkshire.

Yorkshire Gazette, 21st January 1832

Somebody, one day, might see this who is studying the Petre history and look out for references to George Hood?

My ancestor George Hood of Selby, Brewer, [also a Cooper and Tanner at Selby] according to documents, purchased a part of the Manor of Selby, along with others (some of whom were Quakers), in the 1835 Sale and had negotiated with the Earl of Surrey.

Numerous documents mention George Hood of Selby.

Even a Banking Archives has a Selby Branch document of customers in c.1841 including George Hood, but no account application.

He was elected Overseer of the Poor for a year, according to Poor records.

He applied to join the Quakers per 1836 Minutes, but application letters file incomplete. Quakers buried him in 1845, 60 years, as 'Not in Membership'. No surviving headstone.

George Hood of Selby was mentioned in numerous documents, but remains an elusive character.
