Hello,

Can anyone help me identify this uniform? I am utterly clueless about military history!

To my very untrained eye this doesn't look military, perhaps bus conductor (experts, feel free to shout me down!)

Here's an image of a tram conductor

A clearer picture of the cap badge would be helpful if you could manage it.

Ah interesting, I hadn't considered that! I'm afraid that is the best quality of the image I have. I appreciate the reply.

LOL, no, not a bus conductor. He's a midshipman in the Royal Navy.

Peggy,

I assume that you know who he is. You can look him up in the Navy Lists. If you have a subscription to Ancestry, these are available in the collection UK Navy lists 1888-1970, or if you don't have a subscription, you can search manually through the pages of the collection held by the National Library of Scotland

Actually, although not the clearest of photos, I would say he was a cadet/midshipman of the Merchant Navy.
