Request CATHOLIC RECORDS (1813-1814) for McDonald aka McDonnell

I am seeking records of Mary Ann McDonald. I have a family history narrative stating Mary Ann McDonald was born in Carlisle, Cumberland on 2 July 1814 and christened on 3 July 1814. The narrative identifies the parents as Peter McDonald aka McDonnell and Mary Cloughton aka Cloutin aka Clayton, who were married at the same location in 1813. Although the narrative is specific, I have not been able to find actual records to confirm The birth, christening, or marriage. If you can provide any search suggestions or records, I would very much appreciate it.

It appears that records from Catholic churches in modern day Cumbria are held in the Archives in Carlisle.
The earliest Catholic baptisns for Our Lady and St Joseph, Carlisle go back to 1790, but there are no Catholic marriages recorded there before 1841. A Catholic marriage at this date would have not been recognised as  a legal marriage , so left any children regarded as illegitimate.  It is likely there would have been a legal Church of England marriage in the local Church of England church in consequence.  You are going to have to contact  Carlisle Archives for further information.

It's always very frustrating when you get given info without any sources. Good luck.  There are pretty few Catholic records on Familysearch, speaking from experience, but you may find the local C of E ones are recorded, so still worth a look. Nobody wanted their children unable to inherit their landholding or possessions. A marriage which was legal in a country which had persecuted Catholics and still discriminated against them was recognised as valid by the Catholic church until the rules were changed c 1909.

I believe it was in English. A librarian at Cumbria Archived located the record and transcribed it for me. The transcription was in English. She is sending a copy to me. I haven't received it yet.

Having done family research using the records for this particular Catholic church, and taken many copies, they are in Latin, but, on the whole, are fairly easy to read.
