Hi,
Could I please get some help again.
Looking for any information on Walter Swanson, Service Number: 1101, Gordon Highlanders. Believe he may have been a POW. Walter was born about 1892, New Deer, Aberdeenshire.
Thanks in advance.
Daniel.

Here is his card
Firstly his service number 1101 gives an estimated attestation
of around Jan. 1913. ( no. 1181 attested late Feb. 1913).
There appears to be a date 27/8/14 but unfortunately their diary starts Jan. 1915
on Ancestry.
although they were in France on the 11/8/14 so I need to check that out.
Added:
On the 27th. Aug. 1914 the diary states that 1/GH were "engaging with the enemy
while endeavouring to fall back to re-join their Brigade"
This was at Clary France.
There is no list of casualties (which would have included missing men).
The Bde. diary gives a slightly different picture.
On the 26th. part of 1/GH which included B Coy. which your man was in were ordered to cover the retreat of the Bde. & eventually sent orders to retire but in the confusion they remained in place & were subsequently reported as missing.
This was at Audencourt.
I would suggest this was the day he was taken prisoner but not formally recorded until the day after.

B
e
rtry was about 1/2 way between Audencourt & Clary
which is bit more precise.
Although reported missing on the 26th. it may be they were making their way
back when captured as Bertry isn't mentioned in either diary.
