Ann Emmerson
« on: Friday 17 May 24 09:09 BST (UK) »
Hi,

My 4 x great grandmother is Ann Emmerson, who was born on 7 April 1782 at Bolton Fell, Stapleton, City of Carlisle, Cumbria, England.

She went on to marry George Sawyers on 01/02/1806. Her parents were a John Emmerson, who I think was born in 1746 Tanfield, County Durham, England, (but I am not 100% sure of this).

I am trying to confirm who John's wife, (and Ann's mother), was. I know she was a lady named Margaret. Many sources have recorded Margaret Moffatt or Margaret Kidd. If Margaret Kidd the marriage was on 22/12/1764 in  Stanhope, Durham, England.  I want to confirm which is correct before continuing my research but have been unable to do so. Any advice gratefully received.

Kind regards,

Corinthian

I note the baptisms at Stapleton and I can see where the name Margaret Moffit came from. I cannot see an Emerson/Moffit marriage in Great Britain.

Hi Colin,

Thanks for the response. Yes, I had those children. Daughter, Hannah, born in 1796, was was born sometime after the previous child, Bella, who was born in 1789.  If the age of Margaret Emmerson is correct as recorded at the time of her death, (1834 and aged 90), she would have been aged about 52 at the time of Hannah's birth, which seems unlikely.  Maybe I have the incorrect parents for Ann Emmerson and it is not John and Margaret at all. Frustrating!

Kind regards,

All I really know for sure is that my 4 x great grandmother, Ann Emmerson, married my 4 x great grandfather, George Sawyers, (born 1783 in Carlisle, Cumbria, England), on the 01/02/1806 at St Cuthbert, Carlisle, Cumbria, England.

George & Ann’s children

Eldest daughter Margaret 1808 2nd son James 1824 – Ann’s parents

Eldest son John 1815 2nd daughter Elizabeth – George’s parents

If they followed the English naming pattern but not all did their parents would be as above.

However I note a tree on Ancestry has George’s father as James but I do not see a birth record for him and I guess the year of birth comes from the death below?

SAWYER, GEORGE    54

Hi Colin,

George Sawyer's (born 1783) parents were possibly James Sawyers (born 1754) and Mary Dalton (born 1758) but I have been unable to verify this. I have traced several other children for James and Mary but none named George so am unconvinced that this correct. George Sawyers died 11/10/1837, aged 54,  (have D/C), in Sowerbury Lane, Botchergate, Carlisle, Cumbria, England.  Informant is firstly, a James Tait, which has been crossed out, and then a Mr Carrick of Brampton, Coroner. COD was Apoplexy. Possible father, James Sawyers died 10/11/1843, aged 89.  Informant is Dorothy Sawyers, present at death (not sure who Dorothy is).

Kind regards,
