Matthew Walsh Born 1866 Chester
« on: Friday 17 May 24 16:29 BST (UK) »
I have a Matthew Walsh whose military background I am trying to reseach.

Both the 1891 and 1901 Census has him at Woolwich, London and it states that he was from Chester, Cheshire.  I cannot find any records of his birth/family or where he might have been at the time of the 1871 and 1881 Census.

He was serving with the Royal Artillery in 1887 and later the Royal Garrison Artillery and there is a possibility that he served for sometime in India.

Thanks,
Paul

Do you have a marriage for him? Any ideas where and when he died?

What source has him with the RA in 1887?

I can see a service record for a Matthew Walsh. Born 1855 in Dukinfield. Enlisted with the RA in 1878.
He enlisted at Sheffield. Discharged in 1900. Served off and on in India.

This soldier's next-of-kin are brothers Thomas and Anderson Walsh in Hollingwood, Manchester.

He was awarded the Queen Victoria 1887 Jubilee medal and also the 1897 clasp. The medal is inscribed RGA which came into exitence after 1899.

Thanks but I dont think there could be such a difference in both DoB and place of birth to the detail contained within the 1891 census.

Just curious....is this person in your family tree? Or do you have his 1887 Jubilee medal and want to know more about him?
