US Army Punishment
« on: Saturday 18 May 24 20:52 BST (UK) »
Hello, do any of the experts know what the rip raps were? in 1862
I have been reading about a relative who was one of 27 deserted, 5 were captured, court martialled and sentenced to the rip raps.
Another officer spoke for them because their captain had failed his exam and was dismissed and had told them they could go home because he had recruited them and they didn't have to serve under another! They were then reprieved.  Thank you

It's Fort Wool, a man-made island. Colloquially known as the Rip Raps.

Thank you, I wasn't expecting that, I thought maybe a type of flogging. Very interesting.
