Tips to get further back in a tree once the census information
« on: Sunday 19 May 24 11:20 BST (UK) »
I have hit a brickwall in researching my family tree. I am currently looking at the Lumley branch of the tree who all seems to come from Yorkshire ( areas cropping up a lot are Ripon, Castleford, Grantley, Skelding, Grewelthorpe). I have traced back to an Anthony Lumley born in 1703 but just cannot find anything further back than that. I have working my way back through the North Yorkshire Baptism, Marriage and Burial books  1558 - 1812 and although there are plenty of Lumleys, I can find anything that I confirms who the next person back in the tree is.  Any tips would be very welcome!

Hi, out of my area, but I checked Findmypast, there are only 5 baptisms in a 1703 +- 5 year range, only 2 are possibly of interest. Both of Northumberland. You have not given info about Anthony, eg marriage etc to narrow choice. Looks like a hard one. There were a couple of wills, but it seems to relate to an Anthony born 1733.
Good luck.

Have you looked at wills? I have found them to be the next best thing after parish records.

These are wills from the prerogative court of York:

Benjamin Lumley, Kingston on Hull, 1696
Elizabeth Lumley, Bedale, 1728/9
Robert Lumley, Northallerton, 1690
Robert Lumley, Northallerton, 1695
Robert Lumley, Bedale, 1728
Thomas Lumley, Fross Hall, Allendale, 1697
"Tooes" Lumley, York, 1706

I have traced back to an Anthony Lumley born in 1703 but just cannot find anything further back than that.

That baptism is for Anthony Lumley, bap 17 Jan 1703 at Acomb, St John Lee.
Son of George Lumley. Residence: Fallowfield.

There's also a possible burial for the above in 1704. Same father's name and residence.

So he can't be the AL who married in 1733 in Ripon (see below).

NOTE: Fallowfield and Acomb are townships north of Hexham in Northumberland.

There's an Anthony Lumley who married in 1733 at Ripon, Cathedral. Spouse: Jane Grange

Also a 1786 will for an Anthony Lumley (of Skelden). Place: Ripon.

As regards your AL's birth/baptism, you'll need to check parish register availability for Ripon for the early 18th century. Particularly if there are any gaps around c1700 to c1720.

As Vance Mead says, wills are one of the best avenues to try and find relationships.

Do you know their occupations? Did they follow in their fathers' footsteps?
Were they farmers, 'yeomen' etc? If so you may be able to find them in Rent Rolls or Manor Court records. They may have passed on leases to their children.
You would need to find which Manor your ancestor lived in, and where the records for it may be held.
Who were the local landowners?
There is a Manorial Court register on the National Archives site.
https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/manor-search

These records are highly unlikely to be on-line anywhere,
There is still a great deal of information in depositories all over the country, that is, and will probably never be, digitised.

Have you checked The National Archives Discovery site for any mention of them?https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk
And the Yorkshire record office catalogue
https://www.northyorks.gov.uk/leisure-tourism-and-culture/county-record-office

It's difficult to just rely on parish registers at this time, as they can be incomplete.
And as Ashtone says, always check for any burials of children you find born, to eliminate them from your research.
