Hampshire Marriages licences
« on: Monday 20 May 24 08:42 BST (UK) »
I have a marriage of a Joseph Denis DeGelas to Bathia Freeman in 1837 - unfortunately just a few months before Civil Registration.
They were married in Southampton 22 April 1837.
I have the entry from the marriage register, which is not terribly helpful.
However, it does say the marriage was by licence, which may give some more information.

I've been trying to track down Hampshire marriage licences, but can't find them on any site.
Does anyone know where this might be found?

Thanks very much

I can't find the Marriage Licence but her marriage to Joseph states that she is a widow.

There is a marriage in Portsea 19 January 1835 between a Thomas Freeman and a Bathia Pittendgriegh

There is a death for Thomas Freeman in Portsea 27 December 1835 and the Death Duty Index lists B Freeman as the Executor of Thomas's estate

Hampshire record office says....

For Hampshire, a large number of allegations and bonds survive in the Diocese of Winchester collection (ref 21M65/E14) for the period 1689 to 1993 (restrictions may apply to view records less than 30 years old). They are not listed individually on our online catalogue and there is no index available for the period 1838-1993 but there is a paper index for 1689-1837. In addition, some earlier marriage allegations for 1607-1640 and 1669-1680 survive in Memoranda books (ref 21M65/D1/3-10 and 13-14). A paper index is available for each period

Thanks everyone for your replies.

A bit of a mystery where the licence came from then.
I'd hoped it might have given a bit more information about Joseph - at least his age.
His age on the Censuses vary wildly.  :(
