1695 Belgian baptism
« on: Tuesday 21 May 24 11:30 BST (UK) »
I can make out William De Gelas, father Livini?, mother Maria De Calck?
Who are the sponsors?

At the death of William's son Denis Joseph DeGelas in 1838 it stated that his father William was born in Willebroek. Denis Joseph was born in 1754 - perhaps too late to be the son of this William born in 1695?
I've looked through the indexes on the Willebroek film on family search, but can't find William indexed, (in fact no DeGelas births).  I wonder if he was actually born in Mechelen and not Willebroek?
Any comments gratefully received!

Could the father's name be Livini (genitive of Livin) =
Lieven (Flemish form of Leobwin)
Lievin (Flemish form of Leobwin)

Admittedly I've never heard of the name Leobwin (but similar to Lewin?)

See:

https://www.behindthename.com/name/lieven

https://www.antecedentia.com/2023/01/dutch-or-latin-names/

According to the above the Latin form of Lieven is Levinus (Levini in Genitive?)

Correct! Lieven is a typical Flemish name. I don't know what the equivalent in English is.

Thanks Zefiro and manukarik.

I've seen the name Livinius site a lot of times in these Belgian registers.

Saint Livinus of Ghent (c 580-657 CE), saint and martyr, no doubt accounts for the popularity of the name in Belgium.

That would explain it then!  :)
Thanks
