Extensive family tree
« on: Tuesday 21 May 24 21:52 BST (UK) »
I am not quite sure how to handle this.
I have a basic tree on findmypast and some of it coincides with another member's tree.
I think that the owner is just collecting relevant parts of other people's trees to add to his own (his tree now stands at over 200,000 people).
I have checked a couple of the entries and they are correct; some of the others are incomplete.
Is this member just aiming for the biggest family tree he can get? I did try contacting him on a query and got a rather garbled reply.
Your thoughts please.

Totally ignore.

The person is the genealogy equivalent of a tea chest postage stamp collector, who buys in bulk.

It has taken me over 15 years to get 8000 in my tree.

Personally I avoid 99% of online trees, I look at some to see if there is anything worthwhile which there rarely is.

I am only up to 4500 after 20 years (i had a slow start!)
I have a lot of paperwork to back up my research, taking up quite a bit of space. I dread to think what the paperwork for 200,000 people would be like.

Is he a retired medical person living in the far East? If so, then he has plundered my tree as well. No errors that I can see, but also no references. Just name, birth, marriage and death.

I have no idea where he lives or if he was in a medical profession; but he is over 80.

I only have just over 3000 after 30 years plus and that's with deviating off branches into twigs and little twiglets when they've been of interest.

Some people just like big numbers, the more the merrier, without doing any actual research of the people they've accumulated.

"Some people just like big numbers"

So what?  Do they not have every right to pursue numbers if that's what interests them?  It's just a hobby, for goodness' sake.  There aren't any rules.

It can take many years and lots of research, going over the records with a fine tooth comb to compile a big tree. The harder you work, the bigger the family tree gets.

Researching:

DORSET Coombs, Munday
NORFOLK Helsdon, Riches, Harbord, Budery

DURHAM Stewart, Musgrave, Wilson, Forster

I agree. If online trees worry people - then don't use them!! There's no obligation..... ;) :)
