Catherine COHEN, Morrice COWEN & family in London, 1827
« on: Thursday 23 May 24 03:47 BST (UK) »
Thank you for reading! Tl;dr I'm an American researching a family of bourgeois English Jews in early 1800s London and I'm hitting some brick walls. But this is a crowd that loves details, so I'll get into it:

My ultimate goal is to learn more about my 4th-great-grandfather John COHEN (c.1786-1869), who was born in Bristol, is said to have had a sister "Sahara" in London, lived in Jamaica, and then settled in Colombia. I know nothing about his parents, siblings, or any relatives, only his Latin American descendants. A Dominican granddaughter wrote the part about "Sahara," which is probably a corrupted name.

I found an interesting British COHEN family with children born in Bristol, mostly residing in London, with ties to Jamaica. Here's what I know so far:

Catherine COHEN (died 1833 in London) lived on Argyll Street (Soho), and then 122 Sloane Street (Chelsea) in later years. It seems her married name was KNIGHT, but she used her maiden name in her will? Was that a custom? Anyway, she wrote her will in 1827:
https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D252107
She mentioned the following relatives:
- Her late husband (no name).
- Her deceased son (no name).
- Her daughter, Catherine Urania KNIGHT, unmarried.
- Her sister, Elizabeth COHEN, "who I believe sometimes spells her name COWEN,” unmarried.
- Her brother, Maurice COHEN, "who I believe spells his name COWEN.”
- Her brother, Jacob COHEN, "whom I believe also sometimes spells his name COWEN who went many years since to the West Indies."
- Her late sister, Hannah [COHEN].
- Her niece, Hester LEAR [DIAS?], daughter of Hannah, unmarried.
- Her nephew, John DIAS "of Kingston Jamaica."

She mentions some lavish and fascinating items on the first page: "I give unto my daughter my diamond locket with hair, my amethyst ring set with diamonds which the Emperor of Russia gave to my dear deceased son, my laces, my two Indian shawls, red and black, my enamelled watch set with pearls and all its appendages, my late dear son’s portrait in oil and his miniature. I give and bequeath unto my sister Elizabeth Cohen who I believe sometimes spells her name “Cowen” ... my gold watch chain and seals. I give and bequeath to my brother Maurice Cohen who I believe spells his name “Cowen” ... the portrait in oil of my father." Also, the executors of the will were "Lord Burghersh" and "John Osborne, Baronet."

This sounds like an assimilated British Jewish family, presumably converts to Christianity, who rose to gentry status during the rise of the Montefiores, Rothschilds, Mendelssohns, Disraelis, etc.

But I can't find many sources on this COHEN family. The 1829 edition of Boyle’s Court and Country Guide (on Google Books) lists "Mrs. KNIGHT, 122 Sloane-street," I assume that's Catherine COHEN?

St. George's, Hanover Square (Westminster), which is near Argyll Street, has several potential records on this family:
- Morrice COWEN, son of John & Elizabeth COWEN, born July 16, 1791, baptized October 15, 1807.
- Benjamin DIAS married Hannah COHEN on October 27, 1801.
- Jacob Thomas DIAS, son of Benjamin and Hannah DIAS, baptized in 1803.

Jacob Thomas DIAS seems to match John Thomas DIAS, a dentist in Kingston, Jamaica. It seems his father's last name was DIAS FERNANDES, and there's a lot of references on this family: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/lbs/person/view/2146663679

Morrice COWEN (1791-1869) seems to be a British Navy Commander of the same name: https://rb.gy/y30hje
Morrice and Elizabeth COWEN (c.1783-1870) were unmarried and lived together in Watford in the 1851 census and Richmond Green in the 1861 census. They said they were born in Bristol. They were both buried in All Souls, Kensal Green Cemetery, but I have not found their gravestones, if they still exist.

And that's it. No idea who was Catherine's father painted in oils, her posh husband, or her son who met the Tsar of Russia (Alexander I?), and no birth/marriage/death records beyond what I listed.

I would happily take any recommendations on sources to try next. If you find any further information, I would be very grateful! And P.S., my ancestor John COHEN (aka Juan Bautista COHEN) lived a pretty adventurous life, you can read my write-up here: https://ruedafingerhut.blogspot.com/2009/07/my-cohen-and-herrera-leiva-families.html

Take care,
~ Edward A. Rueda

I am assuming this 1851 census includes many of the people you mention.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SG52-P3Q

There various deaths and wills seem to be under the name Dias Fernandes

1861 census
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M7VF-JVS
Milligan - Jardine – Glencross – Dinwoodie - Brown: (Dumfriesshire & Kirkcudbrightshire)
Clark – Faulds – Cuthbertson – Bryson – Wilson: (Ayrshire & Renfrewshire)
Neale – Cater – Kinder - Harrison: (Warwickshire & Queensland)
Roberts - Spry: (Cornwall, Middlesex & Queensland)
Munster: (Schleswig-Holstein & Queensland) and Plate: (Braunschweig, Neubruck & Queensland & New York)

Thank you, yeah it seems these are in-laws. Esther Dias in 1851 is Hannah Cohen's mother-in-law. Interesting to see Dias and Fernandes being interchangeable like that.

So I have a major update! Given this family's connection with Bristol, I was able to team up with esteemed Bristol researcher Caroline Gurney, and she and I made some breakthroughs! This is the family as we currently understand it:
_________________________
Parents: (Nathan KZ/KATZ/COHEN or John COWEN) married (Elizabeth)

Daughter: Hannah COHEN married Nathan LEAR, son of Pais Levi LEHR, in 1794 in the Great Synagogue of London.
Granddaughter: Hester LEAR, fate unknown.

Daughter: [unknown] COHEN married [unknown] DIAS
Grandson: John Dias, of Kingston Jamaica, fate unknown.

Daughter: Catherine COHEN (c.1773-1833) was probably the mistress(!) of Gabriel Tucker STEWARD, MP (c.1768-1836). "KNIGHT" was probably an assumed surname.
Granddaughter: Catherine Urania STEWARD (1801-1864) married Walter Stevenson DAVIDSON (1785-1869) in 1837, no children. (Walter had children from his first marriage.)

Son: Jacob COWEN, in the "West Indies," fate unknown.

Son: Morrice COWEN (1791-1869), the British Navy lieutenant and later commander, died unmarried.

Daughter: Elizabeth COWEN (c.1783-1870), died unmarried.
_________________________
We realized in our research:

1. Hannah COHEN who married Nathan LEAR in 1794 had a father named "Nathan KZ." As said before, Morrice COWEN's 1807 baptismal record in St. George's, Hanover Square named his parents as "John and Elizabeth COWEN."

2. Hannah LEAR who married in 1794 could not be the same as Hannah COHEN who married Benjamin DIAS in 1801 at St. George's, Hanover Square, because the latter was called a "spinster" in her marriage record.

3. If this family was involved in the Great Synagogue, they were probably Ashkenazi.

4. There's a number of people in Great Synagogue records with the father "Nathan KZ" or "Nathan COHEN." One person who is NOT part of the COWEN family is Henry COHEN (c.1790-1867), son of Nathan COHEN, who settled in Australia:
https://www.yumpu.com/en/document/read/12183034/henry-cohen-archive-of-australian-judaica-the-university-of-

5. Caroline found Catherine Urania KNIGHT's baptismal record in 1801 in St. George's, Hanover Square. The father is listed as "Coulson KNIGHT, Esq." but neither "Coulson KNIGHT" or "Catherine Urania KNIGHT" appear in other records.

6. "Mrs. Catherine KNIGHT" does appear in Westminster tax rate books as a property owner in the posh district of Mayfair between 1795-1833. Her estate was valued at a substantial amount of £14,000.

7. Catherine Urania STEWARD is the same age as Catherine Urania KNIGHT, and STEWARD's mother remains unlisted in sources. She was the sole heir of her father, Gabriel Tucker STEWARD, who called her a "beloved daughter."

Needless to say, this is VERY unusual for a Jewish woman of the time! I'm still trying to find more about the COWEN/KNIGHT/STEWARD family. (Also there's no link to my ancestor, Juan Cohen.) Here's my full write-up of what I know: https://geneticfunhouse.blogspot.com/2024/05/amour-erotic-cohen-tzedek.html

Thanks for reading,
~ Edward

One more thing -- Catherine COHEN did not mention a husband in her will, I misread that. The will says she was a "spinster," so she was an unwed mother. "Mrs. Catherine KNIGHT" was probably an assumed name to avoid scandal. I still have no idea who her deceased son was.

By the way, the executors of Catherine's will were:
John Fane, aka Lord Burghersh, later the Earl of Westmoreland: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Fane,_11th_Earl_of_Westmorland
and Sir John Osborn, Baronet: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_John_Osborn,_5th_Baronet
And she mentioned in the will that she bought her house on Argyll Street from the Duke of Buccleugh: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Scott,_3rd_Duke_of_Buccleuch

It's such an unusual Anglo-Jewish family!
