Thomas McCall
« on: Thursday 23 May 24 11:05 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am looking for any help. I have a 3x great grandfather Thomas Mc Call. It says on English census from 1851 to 1901, he was from Ireland, but never any further detail of a County or town.
On his marriage cert from 1845, he marries a Caroline Hilton, in Leeds, travelled around for work maybe?
Including Hedon near Hull, Darwen in Lancashire, the Black country, West Bromwich/Wednesbury, before settling in Leeds.
It says his father was also Thomas McCall. Profession of surveyor/ land surveyor is mentioned, at the end of his life was a night watchman at Leeds port. Died 1907 I have been told McCall is a surname from Cavan, it doesn't feel like it will be easy to find out at all. I am aware he could have Scottish ancestry further back, bit it would be good to find his origin in Ireland.
Any help much appreciated. He was born around 1824 by the way.

Hello
Sometimes we can get a clue from the names of his children and the Irish traditional naming patterns.
He and Caroline had
Thomas Mar qtr1848 Leeds
William Mar 1850 Leeds
Lewis Sep 1852 Leeds
Caroline Dec 1853
Louisa Sep 1856
Mary Kate Dec 1858 Leeds
Ferdinand Frederick Mar 1862 Leeds
Sarah 1865
Francis Patrick June 1868 Leeds
Agnes 1870

We know Thomas 's father was Thomas and Caroline 's father was Thomas and her mother Mary.
So Thomas's mother is likely to be Louisa or Kate/Catherine.
Also living in Leeds 1851 was one McCall family in Turkington Yard
Catherine 45 married  born Scotland
Patrick 21  labourer Ireland (died Dec qtr 1880 Leeds)
Catherine 19 spinner
Margaret 17 spinner (buried 1.2.1861 Beckets Road Cemetery address Turkinston Yard)
Elizabeth 15 doffer
Rose 11
Sarah 7 York
Mary Ann Soul granddaughter 1 Leeds.

1861 gives the family as McCale
Thomas 68 Chelsea Pensioner Dublin
Catherine 57 Dublin
Rose 22 woollen cloth weaver Limerick
Sarah 11 flax spinner York

looking at marriages in Leeds for the potential brothers and sisters ,also at St Peters
Catherine Mcall 18 d of Thomas land surveyer married Benjamin Glossop age 20 4.3.1850
Sarah McCall age 22 6.3.1865 father Thomas land surveyer  Thomas Fryer 23 potato dealer
Elizabeth 19 26.6.1854 d of Thomas soldier married Isaac Knapton

Rose is baptised 15.7.1830 in Drumcollogher Limerick mother given as Catherine McNully.

Sarah's birth reg  Dec 1842 York should confirm the mother's maiden name.I can't see baptisms for the rest of the children .
A possible marriage at Enniskillen 27.12.1821 Thomas McCaul and Elizabeth McNulty (but original  looks like McNully).
Thomas Senior's millitary records provide new info.
Thomas Mc Call 17 born Balbriggen Dublin joined the 81st Reg of Foot Oct 1807 discharged 11.10.1821 before signing up for the Second Veterans Battalion 25.12.1821 and retiring again 24.4.1826 at Enniskillen.
He was 36 5'7" sandy hair grey eyes and fresh complexion labourer.
In 1865 he was receiving £15 pension is described as labourer Ordinance Survey
He died at Leeds Dec qtr 1865 and Catherine died there 1800-Junr 1866

I'd be surprised it Thomas and Catherine McCall weren't your Thomas's father and mother .
We don't have children 1821-1830 for them and Thomas would fit nicely in 1825.The occupation fits  and it would explain why Thomas and Caroline returned to Leeds.

What do you think?

Thomas McCall, a Chelsea pensioner in the 1861 census, served in the 81st Regiment of Foot, a resident in Leeds when he is admitted as a pensioner, died 5 September 1865.

Baptism for Roseann in Drumcollagher, Co. Limerick, born to Thomas McCall & Catherine McNulty in 1839.  The record will also be available on the NLI site via browsing the parish records.
