1861 Census - Birthplace in Monaghan

Hi all,

Looked at this one a number of times but still pretty stumped as to what the enumerator was getting at. This is the birthplace of my ancestor, Peter Carney. I can see "Monaghan...?...Ireland" but the word in the middle is a bit of a mystery.

I wonder could it be Carrickm... as in Carrickmacross? I don't have any knowledge of the county besides looking at maps so any ideas as to where this is referring to would be wonderful, particularly given the challenges that come with locating where an Irish ancestor came from, it could be the missing link.

Do you have his father’s details from his marriage certificate?

Yes his father was stated as Matthew Kearney, a labourer, on the marriage certificate in 1854.
