Tasmania: John Charles LINDSAY and Maria JONES
« on: Sunday 26 May 24 21:03 BST (UK) »
Hello,

The website "Friends of the Orphan Schools: St. John's Park Precinct New Town, Tasmania" states John Charles LINDSAY convict from the Blenheim 3 (arrived Hobart 24/07/1850) and Maria JONES convict from the Cadet 3 (arrived Hobart 12/04/1849) were parents of Maria Louisa LINDSAY who had been admitted to the school on 26/06/1865 (Orphan No: 3237).  In fact both parents had jointly re-offended through "receiving" and had been sentenced to 2 years imprisonment by the Supreme Court Launceston on 25/04/1865.

I have been unable to confirm details of whether or not the couple ever married and, if so, how many children there were besides Maria Louisa.  A report of their trial in the Mercury dated 02/05/1865 indicates the couple were married??  Could someone help with these details please.

Thank you

BAC3

The 30 March 1857 marriage record is on FindMyPast. Tasmania Marriages collection.
Maria was under age, according to the record image. Witnesses: John Jones, Ann Jones

Also on FindMyPast is mum Maria's 1863 convict record for "receiving". Unless it's another Maria Lindsay.

Five possible births in Port Sorell, Tasmania --

Eliza Lindsay - birth 29 Oct 1857

Can't quite make out John's occupation on the image. Maybe "painter".

Parents - John & Maria Lindsay (nee Thompson???
Occupation: Constable (of Burgess)

Edward Lindsay - birth 26 Aug 1861
Parents - John & Maria Lindsay (nee Jones) of Formby
** father's name is Edward on image, but is registered by John Lindsay **
Occupation: Painter and glazier

Thomas William Lindsay - birth 14 Apr 1863
Parents - John & Maria Lindsay (nee Thompson???
Occupation: Painter and glazier

Mary Ann Elizabeth Thompson - birth 03 Apr 1877
Parents - John Charles & Maria Lindsay (nee Thompson???

I see from your other post that you already have the website for Tasmanian records.

There's also an 1855 marriage in Port Sorell for a John Lindsay (born 1831) and Magdelina Muller.
His occupation is carpenter.

It could be two different men. If not, why is JL a "bachelor" on the 1857 marriage record?  ???

The welfare  record linked above by giblet goes through 3 pages. Starting on the left of the admittance page.

The youngest child of the 3 admitted  is Thomas William. He is the subject of the further notes

It is stated that an infant is with the mother and the chn are destitute due to their parents' imprisonment.
