Still unsure who William belonged to.
« on: Tuesday 28 May 24 11:51 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I posted last year about finding the parents of William Bryan (1855-1905). That previous post is here - https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=872059.0

I'm still not sure who William belonged to but would really love to find out. I have him living in Birmingham in three census records - 1881, 1891 and 1901. His birth is always listed as 1855 but the place of birth is different each time:
1881 - Birmingham
1891 - Baslheath, Northampton
1901 - Evesham, Worcestershire.

William Bryan never married his common-law partner (Sarah Emma Mansell Rawbone) so a father's name on a marriage record isn't an option.

I had originally thought that perhaps he was the child of George and Maria Bryan (nee Jeyes) who lived in Northampton. However, there is a strong chance that their William is accounted for in 1891, living as a patient in Northampton.

I also thought he might be the child of George Bryan and Rina Ann Holmes of Bidford. But this George was born in 1850 so the age gap seems too large.

There are no birth records on GRO in Evesham. There is one in Northampton (mother's maiden name Jeyes) but again I believe this William is accounted for. Other GRO birth registrations in and around the areas William claims to have been born are as follows:

William Bryan
1854 M Quarter KINGS NORTON
Mother's maiden name: Bunn

William Bryan
1855 J Quarter MARKET HARBOROUGH
Mother's maiden name: Not recorded (would need to see the digital image)

William Bryan
1856 M Quarter MARKET HARBOROUGH
Mother's maiden name: Not recorded (would need to see the digital image)

William Coxhead Bryan
1856 J Quarter SHIPSTON ON STOUR
Mother's maiden name: Coxhead (I found the baptism - 24th June 1855 - Lystra & Caroline Bryan) UPDATE: this child died aged 4 months.

William Bryan
1857 S Quarter SHIPSTON ON STOUR
Mother's maiden name: Harriss

William Bryan
1857 M Quarter STRATFORD ON AVON
Mother's maiden name: Saul

William Henry Bryan
1854 M Quarter STOKE ON TRENT  (Too far away?)
Mother's maiden name: Not recorded (would need to see the image)

Baptism-wise, I looked at baptisms between the years 1853 and 1857 in Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Northamptonshire and Birmingham. I found the following (which I haven't yet matched up with GRO registrations):
William Coxhead Bryan (as mentioned above) baptised in Tedington.
William Henry Bryan - 22 May 1853 - Bidford - George & Rina Ann Bryan
William Bryan - 8 Feb 1854 - Birmingham, St Luke - James & Mary Bryan
William Bryan - 16 March 1857 - Alveston - Thomas & Mary Ann Bryan
William Bryan - 1 Nov 1857 - Brailes - Daniel & Elizabeth Bryan (UPDATE: accounted for in 1881)

I'm at a loss as to what to do next. A marriage would have really helped but there sadly isn't one. Is there are William out there who could be mine?

Warwickshire, Birmingham, Worcestershire, Shropshire, Bridgnorth.

1891 - Baslheath, Northampton

Is that supposed to be Bozeat?

I'm not sure. It's written on the census as Basleath.

If the entry in 1891 is supposed to be 'Balsall Heath' then there is a chance William belongs to James and Mary Bryan.

One of the baptisms I found was in 1854 in Birmingham. It states that the family were living in Balsall Heath. Could this be the child registered in Kings Norton with mother's maiden name Bunn?
