Sarah Slade, died May 1849 in West Coker.
« on: Saturday 01 June 24 14:11 BST (UK) »
My husband’s GG-Grandfather was Charles Cox Slade who was baptised on 6 Dec 1818 in West Coker.

There's no name of a father (Cox could be a clue, though) and his mother was Sarah Slade, occ: Spinner.

On 25 or 28 Dec 1795, a Sarah, daughter of William and Elizabeth Slade, was baptised in West Coker.  (Transcriptions give different dates).

I have a parish burial record in 1849 in West Coker for a Sarah Slade, birth year 1796, died 29 May 1849, aged 53.

But there is also a burial record in West Coker for a Sarah Slade, born 1795 and died 1805.

I’m struggling to find further information to work out whether the baptism record is my Sarah or the poor child who died so young.  Any suggestions?

With not much chance of finding Charles Cox Slade’s father, I’m hoping to be able to push his mother’s line back a few more generations.

The Sarah Slade who died 1805 cannot have been the mother of Charles Cox Slade as she was only ten years old when she died.

I didn't think she was.

My problem is that I have found the deaths of two Sarah Slades but only one baptism.  I don't know whether the baptism is of the girl who died young or the mother of Charles.

If it is Charles' mother, then I have the names of her parents and the family tree can go back another generation.

It's possible one of them wasn't born/baptised in West Coker but, again, how to ascertain that?

Can you ascertain if she was married or a widow?  If so then this ladies baptism would be in her maiden name not Slade.  If that would help rule her out.

I've only found two Sarah Slades in West Coker at the time - the child who died aged 10 and the mother of Charles.  She wasn't married at the time of Charles' birth and I haven't found a marriage for her between his birth and the burial date.

Where do you get the information that she was 'single' and not widowed.   There is a transcript on FindMyPast that says occupation Spinster but looking at the original register it is Spinner  :)

There are other baptisms at West Coker for a Sarah Slade -

Sarah Born 2nd June 1791 bapt 26 December 1791 parents John and Mary Slade

Sarah bapt 24 Aug 1794 parents Joseph and Mary Slade (East Coker not West Coker)

On 25 or 28 Dec 1795, a Sarah, daughter of William and Elizabeth Slade, was baptised in West Coker.  (Transcriptions give different dates).
I can't see this baptism in the register  :-\
Sorry I was looking at East Coker  ::). Will have another look

The vicar has only given her name in the parish records.  If she was a widow, I think that the father's name would have been noted or that she was the widow of XXX.
