Unknown Soldier
« on: Monday 03 June 24 10:29 BST (UK) »
I have a locket with a photograph of a soldier in it.

Can anyone provide any information on his uniform ?

Not much to go on, unfortunately, as regards badges.

I can see nothing distinctive to indicate unit, only that it is pre WW1.

Thank you for the reply, Jebber.

The only Victorian-era soldier that we're aware of was a Gunner in the 6th Brigade, Royal Artillery.
He served from 1876-79 but was discharged on medical grounds.

Is there any indication that this could be him ?

Quite possibly. Here is an Artillery Gunner in 1868.

Looks good.

But would there be anything to differentiate an Artilleryman's uniform ?

Sorry, I'm a bit out of my depth with this one.

There are variations between the branches, I know there are differences in the colours of the bands round the pillbox hats. Unfortunately   I’m not knowledgeable enough to tell you more detail.  There would have been more clues if it had been a full length image.

Thanks again, all.

I've just looked up the details for a Royal Artilleryman.

Dark blue tunic, red collar and yellow band around 'pillbox' cap.
See attached for photo from the 'Historical Twist Store', c. 1860.
I think that looks about right compared to the photograph.
