John Garden aka Shockey de Garden
« on: Wednesday 05 June 24 01:40 BST (UK) »
Yesterday I was trying to find more information on John Garden (or Gardiner) shoemaker of Aberdeen, who was dead before 1828. (This information is from his daughter Charlotte’s marriage to Thomas Watson that year in Aberdeen).
I came across a John Garden alias Shockey de Garden who was convicted of theft at Aberdeen in 1816 and sent to Australia. The alias intrigued me. I don’t know if he is my John Garden, probably not, but does anyone know more about Shockey de Garden? Even what the name might mean or originate from?
Many thanks,
Marlene

The pet form of the name John in Scotland was traditionally Jock. Going one step further with that name we have the pet form "Jockie" (or Shockey as the clerk thought to spell the name in the court documents) ....

Oh, that makes a lot of sense, thank you  :)  Local knowledge goes a long way with family history research I've found.
Cheers,
Marlene

FindMyPast has a record of a John Garden or Thockey/Shockey Garden aboard the prison Hulk Justitia Apr/Jun 1817.
The original is difficult to read and the info is minimal - a record of victualling, no personal information.

Thanks, I saw a record on Ancestry for the Justitia. If I remember correctly it had his age and some other information.
