Thomas Kelley (1781 - )_
« on: Sunday 09 June 24 19:42 BST (UK) »
Hi,

My 4th gt-grandparents were Thomas Kelly and Ann Sandford, who married on 2nd Oct 1778 at Tedburn St Mary, Devon.

I have come across the baptism of Thomas Kelley, who was baptised at Ide, Devon on 12th Sep 1781, with parents Thomas and Ann. It seems (to me) that he is likely to have been the first child of the above.

My 3rd gt-grandfather, William Kelly was baptised at Dunsford on 19th Jan 1783.

I have not been able to find any further records for Thomas Kelley (1781 - ), or a Thomas Kelly (1781 - ).

Any help in determining his fate would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Gordon Kelly

FindMyPast has the marriage (image of original) of a Thomas Kelly of the Parish of Ide and an Ann Sanford, parish of Tedburn St Mary, 2 Oct 1780. Banns read 27 Aug, 3 Sep and 10 Sep.

Both signed in the presence of witnesses William Sanford and John Kelly.

Can you confirm marriage date of your Thomas Kelly?

Thanks.

Slip of the pen, in the original - sorry!

2nd Oct 1780.

You have the right marriage - the witnesses are their fathers. I had not noticed that Thomas was living in Ide, which would explain the baptism of son Thomas at Ide.

It is possible that Thomas Jnr. appears in the 1841 Census, living at Bradninch. His brother William married Sarah Knill in Exeter in 1811 and they moved to South Wales in 1821.

The bit about being at Bradninch is probably not correct, as Thomas Jnr. would have been nearer 60 than 50 in 1841.

FindMyPast has a record for a Thomas Kelly signing for the Army of Reserve, at Bampton, Devon in 1803.

There are a couple of marriages of a Thomas Kelly (Marine) at Plymouth in the early 1800s.

There is an 1841 Census record for Thomas Kelley (sic) in Monmouthshire, aged 60. There does not appear to be a baptism for Thomas in Monmouthshire c1781, despite the Census saying that he was born in the county,
