The Indian Mutiny, or 1st Indian War of Independence, involved the private Armies of the East India Company, and ended in 1858.

The British Army didn't get involved until after the Mutiny.

The 76th regiment went to Corfu in 1848 and on to Malta in 1850 before sailing for Saint John, New Brunswick in March 1853. It was garrisoned at Fredericton in New Brunswick before embarking for home again in September 1857. It embarked for India in September 1863 and was stationed in Fort St. George, Madras.

An ancestor of mine was a Veterinary Surgeon with the Bengal Light Cavalry, and survived a massacre by hiding in a cellar!

The 76th eventually became part of The Yorkshire Regiment.
Perhaps they might have some records?

Thanks for the link, Ashtone!

Private Henry Barnes (452, 76th Regiment) was in Glasgow in 1861 per the 1861 "British Army Worldwide Index".

I don't see him in any contemporary campaign medal rolls.

It's very unlikely that any of his service records will have survived other than those available on FindMyPast (also on Fold 3).

He had served just 5 months in India when his discharge was approved in June 1864. Finally discharged on arrival back in the UK in November 1864.

Not true. There were many regular British Army units in India at the beginning of the Mutiny, including 6th Dragon Guards, 9th Lancers, 12th Lancers, 14th Light Dragoons, 8th Foot, 10th Foot, 14th, 27th, 32nd, 43rd, 52nd, 53rd, 61st, 64th, 70th Foot. ("Stations of the British Army", April 1857).
