I think this is the Roger Townshend in last clip - He served as Governor of the North Yarmouth garrison from 1745 to 1760 and also sat as Member of Parliament for Great Yarmouth from 1738 to 1747

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Townshend_(British_Army_officer,_born_1708)

Sorry the link only works if you then click on - Did you mean: Roger Townshend (British Army officer, born 1708)?

A very large proportion of the 357 results for North Yarmouth at the National Archives refer to Norfolk. There are no results for the query "North Yarmouth" +Dorset, and a search for "North Yarmouth" +Isle of Wight only returns three results which again all refer to the Yarmouth in Norfolk, and coincidentally happen to have adjacent references to the Isle of Wight.

In Calendar of State Papers, Domestic Series ... 1667 ... to ... 1668, edited by Mary Anne Everett Green, 1893, page 729 gives a reference to "Yarmouth, or North Yarmouth, Isle of Wight".

Presumably, the shortage of modern day references to North Yarmouth is because it hasn't been called that for a few centuries.

On the other hand, I've seen at least one reference to North Yarmouth in Norfolk, so I'm not sure about this.

The only Parish of North Yarmouth I can find is in Maine, USA?

Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Just wondering if, back then, Yarmouth in Norfolk was referred to as "North Yarmouth" to distinguish it from Yarmouth on IoW.

Hi All,
Many thanks for all your replies to my initial post.

I have an extensive family tree for the Audley Family of Great Yarmouth and there is no candidate for a Thomas Audley in Great Yarmouth that would fit in with the  marriage at Corfe Castle which would lead me to think that the reference to N Yarmouth is related to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight. However from your replies it would seem that N Yarmouth refers to The Great Yarmouth region. I will follow up on the suggestions you have made.
Many thanks for all your help

I'm sure you know but just in case. The Parish given on the marriage record just shows where he was living at the time, so he could have been a resident of either Yarmouth but born somewhere else.

Not helpful I know  :)
