ACKERLEY family from Bickerton and Poulton cum Seacombe
« on: Friday 28 June 24 13:34 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm a descendant of the Ackerley family, my grandmother was Hilda Ackerley (1909 -2000), daughter of William Henry Ackerley (1887-1972) both of Poulton cum Seacombe on the Wirral. William H Ackerley was the son of John Ackerley (1838-1912) of Bickerton but that's where it starts to get confusing as there appears to be several John Ackerleys with similar dates and places of birth on various censuses.
Does anyone have any specialist knowledge about the Ackerley families of Cheshire so I can try and untangle the current mysteries I'm faced with as I don't want to get the wrong John Ackerley in my tree.
Thanks in advance
Alan

I am not certain if this is the right person:-

His marriage to Elizabeth Fillingham has his father as Samuel.

The 1851 census in Guilden Sutton has John, son of Samuel, a widower, born 1836 in Guilden Sutton, although Samuel born in Bickerton.

In 1841 in Guilden Sutton has his mother as Sarah.

Samuel married Sarah Jones on 9th February 1833 in St. Mary's-On-The-Hill, Chester.

Only two of the children seem to have been registered on the GRO. All baptised in Guilden Sutton, except for John on 27th March 1836 in Coddington as Acherly.

I agree, William Henry and siblings have mother's maiden name FILLINGHAM, and on the marriage of John ACKERLEY and Elizabeth FILLINGHAM (1870), it has his father as Samuel.

Btw, Welcome to RootsChat!

Thank you everyone for the info and welcome. I had the marriage certificate but was confused by looking at the censuses from Bickerton and with multiple John Ackerleys it muddied the waters somewhat for me. Much appreciated for the assistance :-)

Hi, Alan,

I just noticed your thread. Probably not much use now but I have a few Ackerleys from Bickerton in my family tree as my Great Grandmother, Elizabeth Ackerley, was born there on 8 Mar 1871.

If you end up researching your family a bit wider my tree might be of use. It is 'Gregory Family Tree' on Ancestry.

William Henry Ackerley (1887-1972) appears in a small tree on Familysearch. Son of John bapt 1838 Malpas who was son of William bapt 1818 at Wrenbury son of Thomas Ackerley.
You would of course need to satisfy yourself of the accuracy as it does not agree with what has been found so far.

In fact the familysearch tree is very mis-leading as already established William Henry Ackerley (1887-1972) was not the son of the couple stated in the tree. I think there is enough evidence for me to enter a correction into familysearch.
