who/what is at the birth address in 1921? That should indicate if a private residence or part of workhouse.

1 Union Road, Aston is a private residence - presumably that is the same address as mentioned in OP's post.

PaulineJ - thanks for the information.  I guess I will have to pay for the 1921 census records on FindMyPast and look up 1 Union Road.  Also the other address that the mother put down as to where she was living.  It would appear he was not born in the workhouse, more research to do.

JenB - thanks for the link, 1 Union Road is not listed so I guess he was not born in the workhouse.  I will need to do FindMyPast 1921 subscription and look for Union road and the address where his mother lived as on her sons birth certificate.  Thank you.

There were three workhouses in Birmingham - Birmingham, Kings Norton and Aston.

Looking at the link that JenB posted one of the addresses given for Aston workhouse was 1 Union Road, Erdington.

It looks like the family you are looking for was in Aston workhouse in 1920 (was the birth registered in the Aston registration district?), and by the time the census was taken in 1921 they had moved into Kings Norton workhouse.

It may be that the family moved into the workhouse for small periods - I have a similar tale in my family tree. If they had moved to a different area of the city it may explain why they are in a different workhouse in 1921.

Hi MercianSte
Thank you so much.  The certificate has Erdington, so I looked on the list for Erdington . I should have done a 'search' (control F) for Erdington then I would have found it.  Thanks again.  I can put this one to bed.  Thank you everyone for all your help.

Pamela

Update, someone has just re-pointed out that 1 Union Road is a private house.  Yet the mother is living there and the baby was born there.  The mystery continues.

1 Union Road =  Erdington House, Union Road, Erdington (Aston Union Infirmary/Workhouse)

In the 1921 census, several of the staff who work there refer to it as "Erdington House".

Erdington workhouse records are in the Archives Dept of Birmingham Central Library, but any records within 100 years are closed to researchers. There should be Religious Creed registers, which include information such as: relatives, last address, and date of discharge or death.

Thank you Ashtone.  I too think it was a workhouse infirmary.  I don't live near Birmingham otherwise I would be heading down there now to find those records.

Here is the link about the Archives Dept: https://www.birmingham.gov.uk/info/50134/archives_and_genealogy/1552/archives_and_collections

They do have an email address. Perhaps they can carry out a search for you. I'm sure they will advise if a search fee is required.
