* Trooper C Aldis Matabeleland Relief Force 1896 ? *
« on: Tuesday 16 July 24 17:32 BST (UK) »
Hi

I wonder if anyone can help point me to trying to work out who
" C Aldis " was who enlisted in 1896 with Plumer's Matabeleland Relief Force in 1896
( source - British South Africa  Company Medal for  Rhodesia 1896 )

apart from his name on the Medal Roll ( I have his Medal ) I can find nothing on him
although I am using Ancestry - I assume a South Africa / Africa based search would bring him up ?

hopefully someone with ability to search South Africa or Rhodesia ( Zimbabwe ) can point me
to a source or a line of research
I am very happy to credit them as a source and
I am a bona fide Published Medal Article Author
kind regards

David

You can access the Medal Roll at the National Archives for free. I spotted that some addresses were given - hopefully more information will be given for him.

I think it is reasonable to assume he was already living in South Africa or (what became) Southern Rhodesia at the time. He was possibly one of the settlers who had fled from Matabeleland when the Matabele uprising started in March 1896.

I find that one of the better starting points for locating records for South Africa / Rhodesia for that period is the FamilySearch Wiki listing.

Would the number engraved on the rim of the medal not enable you to trace his service record?
