Finbow family Suffolk
« on: Sunday 21 July 24 19:26 BST (UK) »
Researching my husbands family and unsure whether on the right track. His great grandmother shows on 1881 census as Emma Elizabeth Kemp with father Fred Kemp and mother Hannah and living inPontefract Yorkshire. Not been able to trace her birth. Came across a comment that Fred Kemp is actually David Finbow, son of William and Mahala ( nee Kemp) who was baptised in Mendlesham in 1837. I then found Emma Elizabeth Finbow baptised 1872 , and parents and siblings on census 1871. Unable to fathom why someone would change their name and relocate up here to Yorkshire or is the link between David/Fred a mistake. Hopefully someone far cleverer than me will have some ideas! Apologies for the long post.

This family?
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q27Y-3634 in 1881 as Kemp
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VFFT-HC9 in 1871 as Finbow

In what names are the various children baptised/born - can you figure out when the change took place? It looks like there could be some children missing (judging on the years), perhaps unfortunately some infant deaths.

https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/ does show some entries for David Finbow that might be relevant. Particularly a theft charge around 1871 (stealing turnips).   It might have been as simple as him giving his mother's surname as his own to avoid the association and help him get/keep a job.

Yes those are the family records. We weren't aware of the 36 turnips sca dal so that could indeed be the reason for the change, he was still Finbow when Emma Elizabeth was baptised in 1872 so it may be he needed a 'clean slate' when moving north. Thanks for the info.

Yes those are the relevant records. I think he was possibly trying to hide past brushes with the law.

This was the birth registration I posted, are you sure this is the correct one?

You also mentioned that you had the 1871 census, I guess you mean't the 1881 I posted?
Can you please clarify his parents marriage.

Sorry I didn't set it out very clearly  but David, Hannah and the older children are on the 1871 census. Emma Elizabeth Finbow is recorded as baptised in 1872. Then they all appear in 1881 as Kemp family, with fathers name as Fred and include Emma.
Couldn't find any trace of the family as Finbow after 1871 apart from Emma's baptism.
