What is the meaning of the word RILL please?
Might it be a house/settlement name?
I wonder if this a local word for the BROOK that runs all through the village?
On the Somerset Levels, the watery drainage ditches are known as RHYNES

John Cole

BIRTH 1463 • of Rill in the parish of Withecombe Raleigh, Exmouth, Devon

Rill was one of four manors in Withycombe Raleigh in the 18th century. Prior to 1204 it was part of Bradham.
It was probably located in the vicinity of the present day Ryll Grove.

The manor of Rill derived from the larger manor of Bradham, and included part of medieval Exmouth. At the beginning ot the 14th century the manor was some 40 acres in extent of which 10 acres were waste, 30 arable and 2 meadow; only 3 cottars are mentioned. By 1307 some of the waste was reclaimed and by the end of the 15th century 14 messuages had been created, and the Starcross ferry station was in existence at Pratteshide Quay.

thank you so much for your instant and very detailed solution and for introducing me to another useful website.

Interesting that the present day RYLL GROVE is a wiggly road [from a satellite view] set amongst all the ranks of straight Victorian terraces.  The wiggly-ness might indicate the line of an old boundary or even a stream.

This side-by-side map view (OS 1890) shows that Ryll Grove corresponds to the earlier Ryll Lane. Other placenames in the area include: Ryll Cottage, Ryll Court, Ryll Crest and Rill Park Brick and Tile Works.

There is a pedigree of Cole of Slade in the Visitation of Devon.
https://ukga.org/browse.php?action=ViewRec&DB=13&bookID=240&pagecount=217&submit=Go

This shows John Cole of Slade, died 1543, who was married to Thomasine Walcott.

There are several places called Slade in Devon; possibly this is the one in Cornwood.

The Heralds' Visitations are not always reliable, but they are better than Geni.

In the indexes of Kings Bench, 1527, there is:

Cole, Thomasine, of Cornewode (Devon), gentlewoman, wife of John Cole, of Slade;

http://aalt.law.uh.edu/H8/KB27no1062/aKB27no1062fronts/IMG_7694.htm

and (1527)
Cole, John, of Slade, court holder;

http://aalt.law.uh.edu/H8/KB27no1062/aKB27no1062fronts/IMG_7703.htm

A court holder held the manorial court, either as a steward or an independent sub-contractor of the lord of the manor.
