James Grogan born c1800 - Forkhill Co. Armagh
« on: Friday 26 July 24 12:13 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am looking for any information on my Great Great Grandfather James Grogan born c1800 in County Armagh, possibly Forkhill - Townland of Shean.  I only know his father's name was Bernard Grogan, a labourer from James's marriage certificate.  He married Jane Strong in 1838 in Macclesfield.  He was originally a blacksmith but later became an umbrella maker (self-employed).  James died in Tottenham, London in 1901 and is buried in a Roman Catholic Cemetery in Leytonstone London.  I have small  DNA matches with descendants from the County Armagh area, but as yet cannot narrow it down as to the actual birthplace on James.   Any help would be much appreciated.

As Forkhill R.C. registers start 1844 and there are no burial registers pushing further back in time may not be possible. https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0220
From an Irish research perspective if James had married in Forkhill 1838 there would be no record and you would not know his father's name. If he had married Forkhill 1845 there would be a marriage record with the date, their names and their 2 witnesses, but not their fathers and no address or townland.
Few R.C registers pre-date 1820 and civil registration of BMD's commenced 1864 https://www.findmypast.com/articles/ireland-roman-catholic-parish-baptisms-parish-list

Many thanks for your reply.  I do have James Grogan's marriage certificate from 1838 in Macclesfield, Cheshire, England.  He must have left Ireland as a young man and settled in England.  It is his birthplace in Ireland that is proving to be so difficult to establish.
Kind regards

I saw that, hence the phrasing. You are 20-50 years before an awful lot of people's brick walls due to the late start of the majority of Irish R.C. baptismal and marriage registrars. All DNA matches will be in the same boat.
